Groundbreaking Ruling Says Pets Worth More Than Market Value A Fort Worth, Texas, appeals court ruled that a couple could sue to recover the sentimental value of their pet. Jeremy and Katherine Medlen found their beloved 8-year-old Labrador mix, Avery, at a local shelter after he escaped from their backyard in 2009. They said they were told to come back for Avery the next morning, but, in the meantime, the dog was accidentally euthanized.

A lower court judge had dismissed the case, saying the Medlens could sue only for their dog’s market value. But the appeals court said in its opinion, “Today, we interpret timeworn Supreme Court law … to acknowledge that the special value of ‘man's best friend' should be protected.” — Read it at My Fox DFW

Battling Obesity in Our Pets

Excess weight in pets “comes from a good place because we love them,” a veterinarian for the ASPCA told the Chicago Tribune. “But we need to get it under control because it can cause health problems." A survey earlier this year showed that more than half of dogs and cats in the United States are overweight or obese. How can you get your furry couch potato to work off the weight?
