For one Texas family, peace of mind comes in the form of a four-legged package.
Sarah Wilson has lost track of the number of times that Ruby, a diabetic alert dog, has saved her daughter's life. Three-year-old Faith Wilson was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes when she was just nine months old.
According to KLTV, Sarah had to constantly bolt into her daughter's bedroom at the night to make sure that Faith was still alive. After reading a magazine article about diabetic alert dogs, Sarah got a service canine for her daughter.
With her nose, Ruby can detect when Faith's blood sugar dips below 100 or soars above 180. The dog brings Sarah a certain type of stuffed toy to signify that Faith's levels need to be checked. The British Labrador Retriever even knows how to fetch Faith's blood sugar meter.
"I can't imagine life without having Ruby," Wilson told the station. "I know if it weren't for Ruby, I would have already buried my child. So I don't even want to think about life without Ruby. I can't even put into words what that dog has meant to our family."
Check out the moving video below, and visit KLTV's story for more on Faith and Ruby.
