There’s so much to love about the ever-popular Golden Retriever, an energetic Sporting breed who tends to be gentle and devoted to his people. Learn more about this family-favorite dog, who ranks third in popularity among the breeds registered by the American Kennel Club, and see if he might be the right breed for you.

They’re typically pros at making friends.

The Golden Retriever is generally gentle, cheerful and eager to please. Many of these dogs are great at making friends, including children, other dogs and even cats.

They’re generally active.

The Golden is usually a dog on the move — and he may make you more active, too, since he needs exercise every day. He may enjoy walking, running (health permitting) or hiking with you. Many Goldens also excel at dog sports.

They tend to love water.

Like most Retrievers, the Golden Retriever typically enjoys the water. In fact, he may like to go wimming with you! Just be sure to give him a freshwater rinse afterward to remove chlorine, salt or lake muck from his fur. And don’t forget his life jacket.

They’re usually easily trained.

The Golden tends to be easy to train, especially if you take the time to do so when he’s young. He’s an intelligent dog who can learn to do things like sit on command and come when called.

They’re equipped for a little rain.

The Golden Retriever has a dense, water-repellent double
coat that comes in various shades of gold.
