Miniature Schnauzer standing on stairs
The Miniature Schnauzer is a little dog with a personality that’s often larger than life. He tends to be a talker and generally wants to participate in everything you’re doing. Learn more about this Terrier and whether he might be the right dog breed for you.

They’re typically trainable.

The Miniature Schnauzer is usually an intelligent dog who’s easy to train. Combine that with his high energy levels and ability to learn, and (overall health permitting) you’ve got a dog who’s been known to excel at agility and obedience competitions.

They tend to be busy.

Don’t be surprised if you find the Miniature Schnauzer running around at high speed or digging in your yard. This often athletic and boisterous breed needs daily exercise to channel his energy.

Their shedding tends to be minimal.

Miniature Schnauzers tend to shed only a tiny bit compared to some other breeds, which means you can spend less time vacuuming up fur and more time playing with your pup. But even though this breed’s coat doesn’t shed much, it still needs maintenance. His coat requires regular clipping or hand stripping to keep it free of mats and in pristine condition.

They can make good watchdogs.

Don’t let the Miniature Schnauzer’s size fool you — he tends to bark and will likely let you know if there’s someone at your door.

They can get along with other dogs.

Many Terriers aren’t fond of other dogs, but the Miniature Schnauzer doesn’t tend to be particularly aggressive toward other canines, especially if he’s well-bred and well-trained. However, smaller animals, like cats and rodents, can be another story — Terriers are hard-wired to hunt small animals.
