10 Traits of A-List Veterinary Clients

6. They Heed Instructions

Ask for them in writing, and make your best effort to follow them. Clients who want things in writing are most likely to comply with our recommendations — and their pets almost always enjoy the best outcomes.

7. They Treat Our Team Well

Here’s an issue that I’m really sensitive about: clients who mistreat members of my staff. If a pet owner yells at the receptionist because he’s having a bad day, I promise that we’ll have a falling out. Staff members are people too, you know?

8. They Pay Their Bills

Believe it or not, pet owners will sometimes renege on their financial obligations and, in so doing, betray our trust. Sometimes it’s not even the loss of income that irks me — it's feeling that people are taking advantage of me. In any case, clients who pay their bills consistently, without a fuss, are much more likely to be offered financing or concessions (as in discounts or even freebies) when they need it most.

9. They Share the Love

Adore your vet? Have you ever written an online review to show just how much you care? If you haven’t yet, you should know that online review services account for many new clients. In other words, if you want to give back to your vet, let others know how good she is. And don't forget to tell your vet that you did so.

10. They Trust Us

Here’s the biggie: We trust you to treat your pet with respect and adoration. And you trust us to treat your pet as we would our own. Remember that, and you’ll get an A-plus.
