Dog Rescued After Being Swept Away in River

In the blink of an eye, Sam, a 6-year-old Golden Retriever, ran down a set of steps and into a bitter cold Manchester, N.H., river with a strong current — and no way to get out.

Firefighters quickly responded and a crowd gathered to try to help them and Sam’s desperate owner, Steve Soba, guide the dog down river to a small patch of land, reported WMUR.

Sam listened to the instructions and paddled toward the land, and a firefighter rapelled over a wall and dove in, plucking the dog from the water just in time.

A rescue boat carried him back to shore — and back to a very thankful owner. Once on land, Sam gave a couple of big barks of approval when his owner told him he was OK.

“I don’t know what to say,” Soba said through tears. “I’m just so happy to have him back.”

Sam showed his thanks for the firefighters, too, running up to them and wagging his tail.
