Dog Who Swam a Mile to Shore Reunited With Owner

There was something of an early Christmas miracle this week for Steve Alioto and his dog, Daisy.

Alioto was living on a boat anchored more than a mile off Sausalito, California, with his best friend, a Pit Bull named Daisy.

Last Thursday, he left Daisy on the boat while he went to help a friend during the massive rainstorms that left the region reeling. But when he came back, he found that his boat had sunk. He thought he’d lost everything — including Daisy.

“All I saw was the mast sticking out of the water,” Alioto told CBS San Francisco

But Daisy is quite the survivor. She swam the long distance to shore in the dark, then found her way to the Sausalito Presbyterian Church, where Alioto would sometimes go with his dog to get a free meal.

The Rev. Paul Mowry saw the wet dog in the church doorway early Thursday morning and called police to ask them to scan her for a microchip. After a few tries, Mowry got in touch with someone at the secondary number listed on the chip. The person who answered said the dog had been given to a good friend named Steve. Mowry thought it was the same Steve who came to his church for lunch, reported the San Jose Mercury News.

The next day, Friday, Alioto reported his dog missing to police, and the officer who had scanned Daisy’s microchip and the minister put the pieces together.

Mowry knew that Open Door Ministries would be offering a free lunch that day and called to see if Alioto was there. Mowry was told that Alioto was there and that his dog had drowned when his boat sunk. Mowry took off to give Alioto the good news — that his dog was safe at the Marin Humane Society.

"I walked over and said to Steve, 'We have your dog.' He said, 'Are you kidding me?' I told him the dog showed up at the church. He started sobbing and threw his arms around me," Mowry said. "That dog is his companion. She's his everything."

“I cried so hard,” said Alioto about hearing his dog was alive.

Alioto and Daisy's emotional reunion at the shelter was caught on video, and they’re now staying on a friend’s boat.
