A children’s book inspired by a real life animal-loving girl, Mimi, and a three-legged dog, Maty, is now hitting bookstore shelves in hardcover.

Mimi and Maty to the Rescue! Roger the Rat is on the Loose was written by Brooke Smith, mother of the amazing Mimi Ausland, and illustrated by Alli Arnold.

Ausland is known for starting Freekibble.com when she was just 11 years old because she wanted to help feed the animals at her local shelter in Oregon. Freekibble.com took off, and has now provided more than 8 million meals for dogs and cats in shelters, rescues and food banks all over the country.

Ausland now serves as the Humane Society of Central Oregon's goodwill ambassador, teaching people about animal safety and the abilities of disabled pets, with the real-life Maty, who Ausland met while helping at a shelter, as a prime example.

Freekibble is working with generationOn to donate a copy of the book, which first debuted in paperback last year, to schools, libraries and kids’ organizations for every book that’s sold.

In the book, the dynamic duo of Mimi and Maty help their friend to find Roger, the missing rat, by tracking all their clues in a rescue notebook — something the real-life Ausland used to do when she was just 7.

There are sure to be plenty more adventures to come for this team — both the fiction and non-fiction versions. And Freekibble hopes the book will inspire a new generation of animal advocates.
