Siku, the polar bear who stole hearts when he was rejected by his mom as an infant, turns 1 year old on Nov. 22.

Remember Siku, arguably the world’s cutest polar bear cub?

After being rejected by his mother, the baby bear made headlines when the Scandinavian Wildlife Park in Denmark decided to hand-raise him when he was just a few days old.

Now a much bigger bear, Siku is about to celebrate a milestone: his first birthday. The cub turns 1 on November 22 — Thanksgiving Day. He and his caretakers have a lot to be thankful for. And the rest of us can be thankful for getting to share in his adorable first year!

To mark the occasion, Vetstreet talked with Janne Tofte, one of Siku’s keepers, to find out how he’s doing now.

Q. Looking at pictures of Siku, it's hard to believe that's the same cub we saw last year!

A. Janne Tofte: “Right now he is about 100 kg (220 pounds) and a little over 1.5 meters (4 feet, 9 inches) tall when standing on his hind legs. When he is 2 years old, he will be about 200 kg (440 pounds) and big enough to move in with the other bears, but he won’t be fully grown until he is about 5 to 6 years old.”

Q. What kind of developmental milestones has he reached recently?

A.“He’s past all the really big milestones like learning to walk, swim or stand on his hind legs. But the newest thing for him must be that we no longer sleep in the caravan next to him, and that he therefore doesn’t have one of his keepers nearby all the time. We have spent a lot of time preparing him for this, so the transition wasn’t so rough on him …. He figured out that we didn’t do that anymore, and he was completely relaxed about it.”
