Those eyes are wide open, and they’re looking at you! During his 9-week exam, the panda cub at the San Diego Zoo was more alert and aware of what was happening than at his previous checkups. His eyes and ears are completely open now, and his vision is continuing to improve, the zoo said in a statement.

The 6.6-pound baby was calm and quiet for most of his exam, and the veterinarians and keepers were able to get a good assessment of his health. They determined that he was on track with the five previous cubs born to his mom, Bai Yun, at the zoo.

When the cub started to show off his vocal skills, the team quickly wrapped up their work to get him back to Mom before the two could become stressed.

The little guy will be named when he’s 100 days old, following Chinese tradition. For now, though, the chubby cub has a new nickname — Sausage!
