Nothing brightens a day like a good heroic dog story. We love to hear about service dogs and ordinary pets who truly live up to the title of “man’s best friend.”

Now you have a chance to honor your own heroic hound! Nominations are being accepted for the Hero Dog Awards, presented by the Lois Pope LIFE Foundation and broadcast nationwide on Hallmark Channel. The Humane Association describes hero dogs as “often ordinary dogs who do extraordinary things, whether it’s saving lives, lending a comforting paw when you're sick, or just welcoming you home at the end of a hard day.”

Nominations will be accepted in eight categories: Law Enforcement and Arson Dogs, Service Dogs, Therapy Dogs, Military Dogs, Guide Dogs, Search and Rescue Dogs, Hearing Dogs and Emerging Hero Dogs (the category for pets). The nominating period closes March 26, and the general public will begin voting for their favorites on April 1.

The top vote-getter in each of the eight categories will be flown to Hollywood for a gala at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles on October 6. The dogs will walk the red carpet and be honored with video tributes at the black-tie event, where the winner will be announced. Each finalist also wins $5,000 for the charity of their choice (selected from the contest’s list of 45 charity partners), and the winner gets to donate an additional $10,000. The judging panel includes Whoopi Goldberg, Candy Spelling and Vetstreet’s Dr. Marty Becker, among other celebrities and animal experts.
