A litter of endangered cheetahs was born via C-section to 5-year-old mom Willow at the Cincinnati Zoo’s breeding facility on March 8. The three boys and two girls are being treated around-the-clock in the zoo’s nursery while their mom heals from her surgery. “Mom is recovering, and we’re working hard to put some weight on the premature cubs. Important benchmarks for survival of these cubs are the first week and month of life,” said the zoo’s Dr. Mark Campbell. The cubs are being bottle fed every three hours, and are expected to remain in the nursery for 8 to 12 weeks. — Watch it at

Researchers who studied small perching
birds say their vision is considerably faster than in any other vertebrates. They measured the number of changes per second an animal is capable of perceiving in the blue tit, collared flycatcher and pied flycatcher species. “Fast vision may, in fact, be a more typical feature of birds in general than visual acuity. Only birds of prey seem to have the ability to see in extremely sharp focus, while human visual acuity outshines that of all other
bird species studied,” said Anders Ödeen, the lead author from
Uppsala University. The study was published in the journal

A deer and her fawn are safe on shore in Florida thanks to a concerned kayaker on Panama City Beach. She flagged down
Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s Major Bruce Cooper after she saw the two deer run into the water and swim away from shore. Cooper spotted the pair about 1,000 yards off shore, looking fatigued and disoriented after fighting 2-to-4-foot waves. He was then able to guide them toward the shore and back to dry land, where they ran over the dunes and into the safety of St. Andrews State Park, according to a Facebook post from the FWC. — See photo from the

“Mr. President” and “The First Lady” welcomed two iconic new additions on Friday and Saturday in Washington, D.C. With lots of anticipation and many watching on a live Web cam, the fuzzy gray bald eagle chicks hatched in their nest at the National Arboretum. Their mom and dad have been dubbed Mr. President and The First Lady, and fans have been making suggestions for their babies’ names, including Sasha and Malia after their Obamas’ daughters, and Cherry and Blossoms, for the famed flowers that are reaching their peak blossom in the city now. The two are expected to take their first flights when they’re between 12 and 14 weeks old, said the

A klepto kitty in New Zealand is making quite a name for herself. The 6-year-old
cat has come home with 11 pairs of men’s underwear and more than 50 pairs of socks in the last two months, said her owner, Sarah Nathan. "Now it's getting silly... Every morning we wake up to more," Nathan wrote in a Facebook post last week. She shared a photo of the
cat, Brigit, with her loot. "I've put notes in every letterbox in the street. Someone must be missing this stuff." Despite Brigit’s story going viral, there’s no news yet on who the stolen items belong to. — Read it at the
