Holster, a leaping
Australian Shepherd, won the 3
Westminster Kennel Club agility competition on Saturday in New York. He happily pawed his owner and handler, Wendy Cerilli, after he won. "He's a very loyal and hardworking dog," she said. This was the first win for an
Aussie — for the competition’s first two years,
Border Collies were the top dogs. Holster wasn’t the only winner — Hailey, a 10-year-old
Boston Terrier and
Beagle mix who’s also a therapy dog, won the No. 1 mixed breed agility title, bringing her owner to tears. The 330
dogs in the contest included 76 breeds, from tiny
Giant Schnauzers. There were 26 mixed-breed dogs among them. Westminster’s show
dog competition starts tonight at 8 p.m. ET on CNBC. — Read it from the

There was good news from the
National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's lead monk seal researcher Charles Littnan in his State of the Seal address on Friday. Littnan said Hawaii’s endangered monk seal population is slowly improving. More seal pups were born across Hawaii and survival rates are among the highest in decades. The population estimate increased to 1,272 from 1,100. He also said that interventions to save seals, such as disentanglements, have benefited about 30 percent of the monk seal population. — Read it from the

A new study has found that after a 38-square-mile iceberg grounded near their colony in Antarctica in December 2010, about 150,000 Adelie penguins died because they were forced to walk 37 miles to find food. The trek impeded their breeding attempts. The population at Cape Denison was about 160,000 in February 2011 but had plunged to just 10,000 less than two years later, researchers said. The study was published in the journal
Antarctic Science. — Read it from

A 7-month-old kitten in Minneapolis is lucky to be alive after falling 13 stories from his home in a high-rise apartment building about a week ago. Brennan’s owner, John Knuf, left a window cracked open in his 17
th story apartment when he left to go grocery shopping. The kitten apparently found a hole in the screen and fell through, then landed on a 4
th floor landing. "It hit me hard when I saw him," said Knuf, who climbed out on a ledge to get him. “He’s my little man. He wasn’t moving at first so I picked him up and he started crying.” Amazingly, Brennan survived and is recovering from a broken shoulder and a dislocated hip. He’s expected to go home after another surgery at
BluePearl Veterinary Partners. "He's acting like nothing much happened to him," said Julie Syverson, lead surgical veterinary technician at BluePearl. “He’s a little miracle.” — Read it at Tennessee’s
When staff at
Orange County, Florida, Animal Services saw a 1-year-old
Border Terrier mix doing a fancy two-step, they named her Ginger Rogers — and a video of her cutting a rug went viral over the weekend. “She was instantly well known here at our shelter for her amazing dance moves,” said program manager Diane Summers. “It doesn't seem that she was necessarily trained to dance, it's just something she does when excited.” Just a day after the video was posted, Ginger Rogers found her dance partner. She’s expected to go home with her new owner today. — Read it at
