April 18, 2014: We've scoured the Web to find the best and most compelling animal stories, videos and photos. And it's all right here.
A baby squirrel who fell 75 feet from her nest onto a concrete sidewalk earlier this week was brought to City Wildlife rehabilitation center in Washington, D.C., where she’s being nursed back to health. “She suffered a bloody nose, a broken tooth, and a broken ankle,” according to the center’s Facebook page. The 6-and-1/2-week-old squirrel is being bottle-fed every few hours, and veterinarians examine her leg and change her bandage every three days. City Wildlife also treated D.C.’s visiting snowy owl when she was hit by a bus earlier this year. (She’s continuing her recovery at The Raptor Center in Minnesota.) “Luckily, just like children, this squirrel is young enough that her ankle should heal very quickly,” City Wildlife said on Facebook. — Read it at ABC News
The day after he was rescued, a 14-year-old male orangutan was found with air gun pellets embedded in his body at the Sumatran Orangutan Conservation Center in Indonesia on Wednesday. The primate lay back while he got help from a staff member after surgery in an amazing photo. The orangutan population is critically endangered and its numbers are dropped quickly due to poaching and loss of habitat due to the harvesting of valuable palm oil. — See photo at NBC News
Earlier this month, we told you about a viral video that highlighted the amazing transformation of Gideon, a Pit Bull who was sick and abandoned. Gideon’s happy spirit was revealed during his remarkable recovery, thanks to the Bill Foundation. His rescue video has been viewed more than 1 million times. But the foundation’s Annie Hart revealed on Facebook today that Gideon’s health has been declining. A dermatologist found a form of mange hidden inside his paws. The staph infection in his paws is resistant to antibiotics. Hart said she planned to move into a temporary home to take care of Gideon full time herself, including giving him daily medical baths. Hart also made a plea for donations to help with Gideon’s treatment and training. — Read it from the Bill Foundation on Facebook
Two newborn kittens are recovering after accidentally being shipped 125 miles in a box on board a semi truck from Hollywood to San Diego. A Cox Communications employee was shocked when he opened a box of fiberglass equipment and discovered the kittens on April 4. They were only two days old and still had their umbilical cords attached. "What we think happened was the mom had the babies and she put them in a safe spot … and she left. Then they got boxed up and they got shipped,” said Jenny Bonomini, a nurse at the San Diego Humane Society. But little Mouse and Wifi were lucky to wind up at the humane society, which has one of the only around-the-clock kitten nurseries in the country. They’ll be spayed and neutered when they’re 8 weeks old, and then will be put up for adoption. — Watch it at San Diego’s ABC 10
In time for Earth Day, Disneynature is debuting its latest wildlife documentary, “Bears.” Narrated by John C. Reilly, the film has “visuals so stunning, you’ll wonder how they were shot,” says a Washington Post review. “Bears” follows the story of a mama brown bear in Alaska named Sky and her two newborn cubs, Scout and Amber, over the course of their first year. The documentary highlights both the cubs’ antics and the dangers they face. Dr. Jane Goodall, who’s best known for her work with chimpanzees, is also a Disneynature ambassador and was on set during the filming. She told the Wall Street Journal that one of the most memorable moments was getting to “meet” the star of the documentary, Sky, “when she just walked past very calmly, really, really close.” For each person who sees the film during its opening week, Disney will make a donation to the National Park Foundation. — Read it at the Washington Post and watch a trailer on YouTube
