Brothers Jeffrey and Jermaine have a special relationship. The 8-month-old Labrador Retriever and Pit Bull mixed breed dogs were found on the streets of Philadelphia last month, and are still in search of a new home together. Jeffrey is blind, and Jermaine is always by his side to help him. “Jeffrey really does try to maintain contact with Jermaine, especially when he's in an unfamiliar environment,” said Ray Little of Operation Ava, a rescue group that took the pair in. “It’s amazing how they try to maintain contact with each other." After sharing this picture of the duo snuggling while they sleep, the shelter was inundated with phone calls and emails from all over asking about adopting them. Little says it would be best for potential adopters to come to the shelter to meet the dogs, and they’ll consider those with complete applications. — Read it at NBC Philadelphia
The popularity of inexperienced people keeping chickens in their urban backyards over the last decade has resulted in an explosion in the number of older hens who are abandoned after their egg-laying days are over. Chickens start laying eggs when they’re about 4 to 6 months old and are most productive for about two years. But the hens can live for another 10 years or more after that. Some people then abandon the animals in parks or rural areas, and more of them are winding up at animal shelters.“We had hoped that the fad had peaked and maybe we were going to get a little bit of a break here, but we haven't," said Mary Britton Clouse, who operates Chicken Run Rescue in Minneapolis. She said she got six calls from people looking for homes for chickens in 2001, but that number jumped to nearly 500 last year. — Read it from the AP via ABC News
Chiquita, a 44-year-old orangutan, is recovering well after laparoscopic surgery performed by a team of doctors in Arkansas who usually work on humans. The Little Rock Zoo staff thought Chiquita was suffering from an ovarian cyst, and asked Dr. Brian Burton, an OB-GYN, to do the surgery because he could do it in a minimally invasive way, without stitches for Chiquita to pick at. It turned out that the ape had a hernia, and he called in general surgeon Dr. Eric Paul to repair it. Dr. Julia Watkins, another OB-GYN who worked on the surgery, said that once the laparoscope was in place, the surgery wasn’t much different than working on a human. — Read it from the AP via the News Observer
Of the 77 bottlenose dolphins who have been stranded in Florida’s Indian River Lagoon this year, only one has survived. Known as R08, the surviving dolphin was rescued from the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge by SeaWorld staff in June after a kayaker spotted him. He was nursed back to health, gaining 140 pounds while he was rehabilitated. He was released on Tuesday, after researchers collected information on him that they hope will shed light on what happened to the other dolphins. “He was very quick to socialize with other dolphins and chase other fish,” said Teresa Mazza, a research assistant with Hubbs-SeaWorld Research Institute in Melbourne Beach. Scientists believe the lagoon dolphins have suffered from a different ailment than the mysterious measles-like illness that biologists say has claimed the lives of more 750 dolphins on the East Coast this year. — Watch it at Florida Today
The 31-year-old singer and newlywed had sad news on Friday. Her adopted dog, Joplin, passed away. “My best friend died yesterday," Clarkson told her fans via Twitter. "Joplin was special. He fought his whole life to survive & now he can rest. I loved him." Clarkson had feared the worst two years ago when Joplin went missing, but she found him safe and sound. "Yes, I might be too attached to my dogs and highly sensitive, but I don't care. I love them!" she said at the time. — Read it at People Pets
