When you think of Maine, usually lobster or moose come to mind. Elephants are probably a little more unlikely. But the New England state is now home to two retired and injured circus elephants, who are being cared for at Hope Elephants, a newly built rehab facility. The non-profit is run in part by veterinarian Jim Laurita, who was a handler for Opal and Rosie years ago, when he worked with a traveling circus. The Asian elephants, who are now in their 40s, are being treated for nerve damage, leg and foot problems. “Our goal is rehabilitation for the elephants, education for the local school kids, with the kind of greater goal of bringing the conservation message to the kids,” Laurita said. — Watch it at AP via USA Today
Though you won't see them in the Olympics anytime soon, long-finned pilot whales use synchronized swimming to alert each other to threats, according to a study of the species in the Strait of Gibraltar. “When we arrived at the watching area they were swimming at their normal rhythm but after 10 or 15 minutes near to them, the mothers and their young began to swim in a synchronized manner in alert position,” said Renaud de Stephanis, coauthor of the study, which was published in the journal Behavioral Processes. “This is a sign of affiliation to the group." Previously, little was known about the species’ social structure, but the study determined that they have permanent partnerships, meaning that they spend their lives with the same group of whales. — Read it at Science Daily

Britney Spears, mom of two boys, now has a “new little baby girl” — a tiny puppy named Hannah. The X Factor judge took to Twitter to show off pictures of her new pup, and announced that @HannahSpears is Tweeting now, too. She’s already got nearly 10,000 followers, and is asking them for fashion advice. In her first Tweet, she asked, “Should I wear a bow?” — Read it at People Pets
In parts of the U.S., you might have to stop for a deer to cross the road. In Australia, you’ll find something else. A pair of emus escaped from their enclosure in Sydney, where they crossed several busy streets and visited some local children before a resident lured them back to their home with some food — and fixed the hole in the fence to prevent them from escaping again. — Watch it at Today
