Bonnie, a deaf English Springer Spaniel, is being credited with tipping off her owner to the presence of a suspected burglar in their home in Portland, Ore. The friendly dog didn’t bark or growl at the intruder. Instead, she wanted to play. But the commotion she made at 6 a.m. on Saturday was enough for owner Dan Strasser to get out of bed and see what was going on in the living room. There, Strasser says he caught the man trying to steal his laptop, and when he tried to escape, Strasser cornered him in the garage. He’s thankful to Bonnie for sniffing out trouble. "She smelled him because she does have a very good sense of smell," said Strasser. "She jumped up and got all excited thinking someone was there to play." — Read it at Oregon’s Fox 12
Who’s that lurking over Rihanna’s shoulder? While spending a beach weekend in Thailand, the singer shared a photo on Instagram of herself snuggling with a slow loris. But the primate is part of a protected species, and the photo led to the arrest of a man, 20, and a boy, 16. Authorities in Thailand are cracking down on vendors who exploit wildlife by offering tourists the chance to take their picture with them for cash. The two face a penalty of up to four years in prison and a $1,300 fine. — Read it at USA Today
Researchers at the University of Oxford have found that shy male birds preferred to spend their time with fellow shy friends. Their study of 221 great tits found that the male birds who showed they were shy in captivity tended to stick by their friends in the wild for longer periods of time, while their more adventurous counterparts moved quickly from flock to flock. Researchers hypothesized that the shy males may be trying to avoid the more aggressive males by sticking together, but said more research was needed to determine if that was the case. The paper was published in the journal Ecology Letters. — Read it at National Geographic
Injured Kitten’s Story Goes Viral
Just a week ago, Sir Stuffington was living on the street in Troutsdale, Ore., suffering from trauma to his right eye and other health problems. He and his brothers were taken to Multnomah County Animal Services, where the 6-week-old kittens were treated before going home with foster mom Blazer Schaffer. Now, the one-eyed kitten has become a sensation on Facebook, with more than 23,000 followers. Professional photos of Sir Stuffington dressed up like as a pirate are being sold to raise money for his medical care and the care of other animals at the Multnomah shelter. Schaffer is hoping the kitten’s survival story will help raise awareness about the importance of helping local animal shelters. — Read it at Oregon’s KOIN
Jet, a black Labrador guide dog, is being hailed as a hero for pushing a baby’s stroller out of the way of an oncoming car near her home in England. The dog was walking with his legally blind owner, Jessica Cowley, and her 1-year-old son Jacob. As they stepped off a curb to cross the entrance of a parking lot, Jet pulled away from Cowley and pushed Jacob’s stroller out of harm’s way. Cowley was knocked over by the car but was OK. "Even while I was lying face down on the ground, I was happy to know [Jacob] was safe,” Cowley said. "[Jet] reacted really quickly, and she's just amazing." Jet has been Cowley’s guide dog for five years, and she says the dog thinks of Jacob “as her own.” — Read it at the U.K.’s Telegraph
