Molly, a Pit Bull who lost her left hind leg when she was hit by a train last month, went home with her favorite guy on Valentine’s Day — the Amtrak police officer who saved her life. Officer Kevin McMullen visited “Miracle” Molly about a week after he carried her out of a Maryland train tunnel, and it was clear she remembered and loved him. He wanted to adopt her from the Baltimore Animal Rescue & Care Shelter, but he and his girlfriend have three other dogs at home. Once Molly had healed enough, McMullen brought his German Shepherd, Labrador Retriever and Pit Bull to meet her. The pack of four made it clear they would become fast friends. Molly is thrilled with her new home. "She's been curled up on my lap since we got her home yesterday," McMullen said. "I have three other dogs, and they're all big. Right now, I've just got a tiny little section of the couch to myself." — Read it at the Baltimore Sun
A 3-year-old Labrador Retriever named Heart showed an audience in New York how she could sit properly in front of a crowd while her handler walked away, and sidestep in perfect pace with her, too. Heart won the Westminster Kennel Club’s first obedience competition Monday, coming out on top in a contest with 33 other dogs. “She is just amazing,” said owner and handler Linda Brennan of New Jersey. And, Brennan adds, “we had the cute factor.” Meanwhile, judges decided on the finalists for the first four groups in the Westminster Kennel Club’s 140th Annual Dog Show at Madison Square Garden Monday night. Rumor, a German Shepherd who won the Herding Group, seemed to be winning over the crowd so far. The show finishes tonight and will air on the USA Network starting at 8 p.m. ET. — Read it at CBS New York
A group of five skiers had an amazing chance meeting with an endangered snow leopard who was hiding on a slope at Gulmarg Resorts in northern India. Owen Lansbury of Australia caught the situation on video, and posted it on Facebook last week. The footage shows the big cat crouching camouflaged in the snow. "I stopped just as it huddled in the snow, where it stayed for about a minute, checking us out," Lansbury told the India Times. "It then let out a solid roar and bounded away down the slope towards [American tour guide Dave Marchi], but scooted off into the forest, where we think it probably had a kill stashed … Pretty amazing experience." There are only an estimated 6,000 snow leopards left in the wild worldwide. — Watch it at Huffington Post
At a table decorated with balloons and red roses, Kohl and Zela, celebrated their 22nd Valentine’s Day together over a romantic fish dinner. The couple, who happen to be a pair of African black-footed penguins, marked the occasion in New Orleans, at the Audubon Aquarium. "While most species of penguins mate for life, there is still a divorce rate," said Audubon’s senior aviculturist, Tom Dyer. "We've seen our share of penguin heartbreak, infidelity and sometimes joyful reunion here in our colony. Kohl and Zelda, however, are spending their 22nd Valentine's Day together. They are Audubon's sweethearts." — See photos at Buzzfeed
We’ve seen some sweet surrogate moms in the past, but here’s a more unusual pair. A Golden Retriever in Florida has been helping his family care for three foster kittens. The dog’s owner posted a video of the dog with one of his feline friends to YouTube. "This is our very sweet 3-year-old English Cream Golden Retriever dog and his little 3-week-old foster kitten named 'Taylor.' She is snuggling, cuddling and rubbing up against him while he licks her face clean of the wet food she just ate," wrote YouTube user Paul79UF. — Read it and watch it at UPI
