A 911 dispatcher in Norfolk, Va. received an unusual call Tuesday: “I’d like to report a lion sighting,” the caller said. “Say that again?” asked the dispatcher. What two more callers also reported as being a baby lion on the loose, was actually a Labrador Retriever-Poodle mix named Charles the Monarch, who was groomed to look like the Old Dominion University mascot — a lion — by his owner Daniel Painter. “He has a thousand-and-200-some friends on Facebook,” said owner Chris Painter. We’re guessing that number will grow. — Read it at The Virginian-Pilot
Check your cabinets — Milo’s Kitchen Chicken Jerky and Chicken Griller dog treats have been recalled due to trace amounts of unapproved antibiotics found in several lots of the products. "While there is no known health risk, the presence of even trace amounts of these antibiotics does not meet our high quality standards,” said said Rob Leibowitz, general manager of pet products. “Therefore, today we decided to recall both products and asked retailers to remove the products from their shelves. Consumers who discard the treats will receive a full refund.”
After a long campaign, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) announced that United Airlines has agreed to not ship primates for use in testing labs. It’s a small victory for the animal rights group who will now focus its efforts on Air France and three other international airlines. "PETA and its international affiliates will now escalate efforts to show Air France and the other three airlines still shipping thousands of primates to pain and misery in laboratories that people around the world are disgusted by this practice and will choose other airlines until the companies stop facilitating this cruelty," said Justin Goodman, PETA's director of Laboratory Investigations. — Read it at Huffington Post
Today marks the much-anticipated public debut of the San Diego Zoo’s giant baby panda after a 5-month-long wait. "The Panda Team feels our cub has become confident enough to navigate around this large habitat while being admired by his adoring fans," said the zoo's blog moderator Debbie Andreen. His time in the habitat will be limited to a few hours each morning while he gets acclimated to being on display. — Read it at NBC San Diego
When Jeff Hoffmeister’s blood sugar dropped to dangerously low levels in the middle fo the night, his service dog Kira jumped into action. "She kept persisting and finally ended up lying on top of me and licking my face to wake me up so I could get something to eat and bring my blood sugar up," he told his local CBS news station in Ft. Wayne, Ind. The 6-year-old Golden Retriever hasn’t left his side since the family got her from a non-profit group Power Paws in Scottsdale Ariz. "It's a great comfort to me," said Hoffmeister. "I know it's a comfort to my wife. You know she always used to worry about me at night going low." — Read it at CBS News
