Bartley, an energetic 3-year-old
Schnauzer who loves chasing squirrels, recently surprised his owners by jumping through a glass window to get to one in his yard. “I heard the glass break. I looked out and there he was, outside,” owner Jen Ranallo said. “Once I got him back inside and checked on him, I realized he needed to get to a veterinarian immediately.” The pup needed emergency surgery to close a serious cut on his stomach and is currently recovering. The Ranallos say they plan to remove the
bird feeder from their yard, to hopefully keep the temptation of squirrels out of Bartley’s sight. — Read it at
An ancient flying reptile with a strange butterfly-like head has been unearthed in Brazil. The new species,
Caiuajara dobruskii, belongs to the pterodactyl family and has a bony crest on its head that looks like the wing of a butterfly. Researchers found hundreds of the reptile’s fossils in one bone bed, leading researchers to believe that flying reptiles were social animals and traveled in flocks. The study was published in the journal
PLOS ONE. — Read it at
A baby Springhare born at the
Antwerp Zoo in Belgium two weeks ago is getting round-the-clock care from zookeepers after its mother failed to nurse. The keepers feed the small, nocturnal rodent every two hours with puppy milk and fennel tea (to help with digestion) and weigh it regularly to make sure its thriving. Native to South America, springhares were once considered vulnerable as a species, but have since been moved to a level of “Least Concern.” — Read it at
A pair of conjoined twin dolphins washed ashore in Turkey this week; the dead dolphin was discovered by a tourist. A rare occurrence, it’s only the fifth known case of conjoined dolphin twins, and the third to survive past the fetal stage. “These types of twins would not be able to survive long in the wild due to the difficulties they would have in swimming and surfacing to breathe,” said
Shawn Johnson, director of veterinary science at the
Marine Mammal Center in California. Researchers aren’t sure of the age of this pair — unfortunately, the body of the dolphins is missing. If found, a local university in Turkey plans to put it on display. — Read it at
Chihuahua named TurboRoo
first made headlines in July when he was fitted with a wheelchair. But the pup, born without front legs due to a genetic defect, recently got an upgrade: Mark Deadrick, owner of San Diego-based design company
3dyn, contacted TurboRoo’s owner Ashley Looper and offered to create a better cart for the
dog using his company's 3D printer. After two initial tries, Deadrick is currently working on printing the perfect fit for TurboRoo. In the meantime, Looper is starting a charity to get carts to any disabled
dog who needs one. — Read it at
