A 2-year-old Bernese Mountain Dog named Ohly got spooked and ran off during a snow trek on a part of British Columbia’s Mount Seymour nearly two weeks ago. Ohly’s family and friends tried to search for him, but with the dog in a ravine that’s so steep it’s known as “Suicide Gully,” the North Shore Rescue team stepped in so that the searchers weren’t putting themselves in danger. The team found Ohly, but the scared dog kept running away. On Saturday, with the help of a helicopter, the team was finally able to recover to Ohly, and reunited him with his relieved family. He was dehydrated, but otherwise O.K. after his 13-day adventure. The Goad family took to Facebook to thank the team, other volunteers and those whose donations covered the $9,000 cost of the rescue, calling Ohly’s return the “best Christmas present ever.” — Read it at the Huffington Post Canada
There’s sad news this week for actress and singer Miley Cyrus, who’s a well-known dog lover. On Tuesday, she announced that her 2-year-old Yorkie, Lila, had died. "My heart has never been so broken,” she wrote on Twitter, and condolences from her fans poured in. Cyrus didn’t say what caused Lila’s untimely death. The pup was hospitalized in October for unknown reasons. The star and her fiancé, Liam Hemsworth, have four other rescue dogs at home. — Read it at People Pets
A team working with National Geographic Explorer Dr. Mari Lafleur in southwestern Madagascar got a surprise with the camera traps they were using to learn about the social structure of ring-tailed lemurs. Hoping to capture images of the lemurs’ nighttime predators, the cameras revealed that the lemurs, thought to be most active during the day, also have a “robust nightlife.” Because most previous studies of the species have focused on their daytime activities, the photos give researchers a new window into the lemurs’ lives. — Watch it at National Geographic
Dressed as jolly old St. Nick in scuba gear, a worker at an aquarium in Seoul, South Korea, got into the facility’s main tank to swim with and feed the sardines. The fish seemed happy to have the visit from Santa, as they danced around him. But none were as delighted as the schoolchildren who were standing outside the tank’s glass walls. Santa stopped swimming long enough to pose for pictures with the excited onlookers. — Watch it at Today
With more than 50,000 votes in its online poll, the public overwhelmingly favored the name Lily for the Oregon Zoo’s Asian elephant calf. The name is a tribute to the pachyderm’s mom, whose name is Rose-Tu. “The outpouring of support for the zoo and its newest resident has been incredible,” said Kim Smith, the zoo’s director. — Read it at Seattle’s Fox 13
