With his owner, John Dolan, in the hospital for a skin condition, 7-year-old Zander was depressed. So, the Husky mix broke out of his home last week and navigated a tricky two-mile route to the Good Samaritan Hospital in Islip, N.Y., where a hospital employee found him outside on the street. “It took a few days to sink in, really, that he was coming to see me,” Dolan said. A few days later, Zander, whom the Dolans had rescued five years ago, tried to visit Dolan at the hospital again. Now, he’s quite happy to have his owner back at home. “He’s my buddy,” Dolan said. — Watch it at Fox News
A 16-year-old mammoth that died tens of thousands of years ago was found in Russia and named Jenya, for the boy who found it sticking out of the frozen mud in the Siberian permafrost. The mammoth, which was excavated last month, was 6 feet 6 inches tall and weighed 1,100 pounds, according to Prof. Alexei Tikhonov of the Zoology Institute in St. Petersburg, Russia. Jenya was small for his age and likely died because he had a missing tusk that made it difficult to fight other mammoths or human hunters who settled in the area. — Read it at AP via Yahoo
Ruben, a baby chimpanzee whose mother died of a heart condition soon after he was born at the Lowry Park Zoo in Tampa, Fla., now has a new family at the Oklahoma City Zoo. There were no guarantees that the troop would accept the new member, but surrogate mom Kito has gently bonded with the baby. “She never forced him,” said Laura Bottaro, the Oklahoma City Zoo’s mammal curator. “She waited for him to come to her.” The strategy seems to be working, as Ruben can be seen riding on Kito’s back and playing with the other chimps in the troop. — Read it at the Huffington Post
Pierre, a 7-year-old tuxedo cat, has a special love for being in an office environment. So, Tony La Russa’s Animal Rescue Foundation of California, which took in the once-chubby tabby two years ago and has since helped him lose 13 pounds, turned to LinkedIn to look for the right person to “hire” him. Pierre's profile reads, "Experienced office cat with larger-than-life personality seeks full-time, long-term position," and includes his “purr-sonal” skills, the like ability to contribute to a low-stress workplace. — Read it at the San Jose Mercury News
The 9-week-old panda cub born to Bai Yun at the San Diego Zoo had his eyes wide open and was much more alert at his latest exam. He got a clean bill of health, and his growth was on track with the other five pandas who were born at the zoo. When he started to show off his vocal skills at the end of the exam, veterinarians quickly returned him to mom, to avoid putting stress on either of the bears. — See photo at People Pets
