Jessica Rowe didn’t think she’d ever find her daughter’s best friend — a Pekingese with one eye who she’d adopted from the pound. Buddy ran away from his Mesa, Ariz., home in May 2011, when a monsoon storm blew open his townhome’s gate while Rowe was at work. But that changed on Friday, when she got a call from the Phoenix police. The little dog had run out of an apartment complex in nearby Phoenix and struck the side of a passing police car. Officer Don Martin immediately stopped and went back to help the dog, and took him to a veterinary hospital, reported AZ Central. There, doctors were able to save Buddy — and track down his original owner. “What potentially was a terrible situation, it turned out incredible. I still can’t believe it,” said Martin, who paid Buddy’s bill at the animal hospital. Once he recovered, Buddy was reunited with a grateful and emotional Rowe. — Watch it at Today
A pair of studies shows that capuchin monkeys watch the social interactions between others, and then avoid individuals who they think have misbehaved. In both studies, they watched the interactions between two actors. After each scene, the monkeys consistently avoided taking treats from the actors who’d acted selfishly or refused to help another actor in the scene. The findings of the latest study were published in the journal Nature Communications. — Read it at Live Science
The NFL quarterback known for serving time in federal prison in a famed dog fighting case has recently been spotted taking his family’s new dog to training classes at a PetSmart store in New Jersey. Vick surprised many people in October when he announced in a statement that his family had a new Belgian Malinois. He said at the time that he felt it was important for his children to “develop a healthy relationship with animals.” — Read it at PawNation
You may have seen a certain fluffy, white bear in the headlines in the last few days. The playful 3-month-old polar bear cub, who was born at the Buffalo Zoo to mom Anana and dad Nanuq in late November, is still too small to go on exhibit. But she did have an adorable introduction to the public on Friday, as the zoo announced a new phase of fundraising to build its new polar bear exhibit. The zoo says it needs the new construction to keep the baby bear in Buffalo, where she’s been hand-raised by her keepers. — Read it at the Buffalo Zoo Blog and watch video at the Huffington Post
Over at the Cincinnati Zoo, keepers are busy raising another new baby — a gorilla who we told you about last week. The 1-month-old baby, who was rejected by her mom at the Gladys Porter Zoo in Texas, now has a team of surrogates at her new home. The keepers wear all black and grunt affectionately to the infant, as they try to imitate a primate mom. They even have gorilla outfits, complete with hairy vests, that they’ll put on later to prepare the baby — who they’ve named Gladys — to be introduced to two female gorillas who’ll take over as her surrogate moms. "Whatever a gorilla mom would do with her baby is what we have to do with this baby," said Ron Evans, the zoo's primate team leader. — Read it at AP via The Christian Science Monitor
