Days-Old Kitten Left at Fire Station

When firefighters at Station 202 in Rialto, California, found a 3-day-old kitten left in a box at their front door Monday, they jumped into action to save her. “We just knew we had to act quickly to save this kitten,” said Firefighter Jake Ploehn, who filled a syringe with milk to feed her. “For her it was a life or death situation.” Meanwhile, Ploehn’s coworkers posted pictures of the kitten on the fire department’s Facebook page, saying they needed to find a home for her right away. They quickly connected with animal rescuer Noni Schirm, who raced to the station to pick up the kitten. She named the little girl Jake, after the firefighter who rescued her. — Read it at California’s San Bernardino Sun

Texas Dog Found in Florida

A week after she disappeared from her home near Houston, Texas, an 11-month-old miniature Australian Shepherd was found 900 miles away, near Jacksonville, Florida. Bell was brought in as a stray to the Clay Humane Society, where she was scanned for a microchip. Bell’s owner, Matt Turner, had been searching for her for days and was shocked to hear she was in Florida. "There is so much we don’t know about her getting here, but she is in fantastic shape," said Clay Humane’s Dr. Christian Broadhurst. Turner and his son, Heston, flew to Florida and were reunited with a very happy Bell on Monday morning. "She is a real special dog to us and we feel fortunate to have the chance to get her back," said Turner. — Watch it at Florida’s First Coast News

Cheetah Cub Meets Companion Puppy

After early signs that a cheetah cub might be rejected by her mom, keepers at Australia’s  Taronga Western Plains Zoo stepped in to hand-raise her. Now that Siri is 9 weeks old, they’ve gradually introduced her to a 7-week-old Retriever and Mastiff mix puppy who will be her companion. Cheetah cubs are often paired with puppies because the dogs are known to help calm the skittish cats. Cheetahs learn to take cues from the dog’s body language. When the cheetah sees that the dog is relaxed in new or public surroundings, it puts the cheetah at ease. Siri and her puppy have had 2 or 3 short play times a day and are becoming fast friends. — Watch it at YouTube
