Photos Capture Rare Jaguar
Snapped by remote cameras, new photos released by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service show that a rare male jaguar has been roaming in Southern Arizona’s Santa Rita Mountains since October. The mountains are part of the big cat’s historic range, and the images indicate they’re moving into the American Southwest from northern Mexico. The jaguar has been photographed by the University of Arizona’s cameras in five locations in the last nine months. The images were released to the Arizona Star this week in response to a request made under the Freedom of Information Act. This is the only jaguar known to have taken up residence in the U.S. since the cat known as Macho B died in Arizona in 2009. — Read it at AP via Yahoo News
Mayor and Senate candidate Cory Booker, who saved a freezing dog from outside a Newark, N.J., home in January, has come to the rescue of another pooch in trouble. On Thursday night, @shankdog3000, Michael Cruickshank, Tweeted the mayor about a dog he said he’d been told was locked in a small crate in an empty lot in the steamy city for 4 days. Without hesitation, the hands-on mayor asked for the dog’s location, and two minutes later, he Tweeted that he was on his way there. “I'm on the scene & Located the dog. U were right too report. Inhumane & cruel. Working 2 get the animal secure now. Thank u MT @shankdog3000,” Booker Tweeted at 9:49 p.m. Less than an hour later, he confirmed on Twitter that the dog had been secured and transported to a shelter. Cruickshank’s “compassion &love helped stop some really cruel treatment. Wish we could find person responsible,” Booker Tweeted. And Cruickshank was thankful to the mayor. “@corybooker you are awesome,” he wrote. — Read it at Twitchy
Take heart, cat lovers. A new study finds that cats actually do pay attention to their owners. In an experiment, researchers found that the felines had a subtle reaction to recordings of their owners’ voices, moving their heads and ears toward the source of the voice. At times, they also displayed pupil dilation, which can be a sign of powerful emotion in a cat. These reactions happened more often when they heard their owner’s voice than one they hadn’t heard before. “Sometimes cats appear aloof, but they have special relationships with their owners,” said study co-author Atsuko Saito of The University of Tokyo. The study will be published in the July issue of the journal Animal Cognition.— Read it at Discovery News
Two Red Pandas Born in Alabama
A first-time red panda mom has given birth to a pair of cubs at the Birmingham Zoo in Alabama. The cubs, born on May 30, are the first of their species to arrive in the U.S. this year. Three-year-old mom Sorrel is very protective of her newborns, and is nursing them regularly. Red pandas are delicate at birth and stay close to their moms until they’re about 3 months old. The cubs are currently staying off exhibit, and are expected to start to stray out of their den and into the public eye in the fall. — Read it at Zooborns
After spending the last few months in quarantine at a Munich, Germany, animal shelter, the Bieb’s capuchin monkey can relax at home — in a zoo. Mally was seized by German officials in March when he was found on Bieber’s private plane without documentation, and the pop star failed to present the papers needed to get him back. The monkey is now adjusting to life with six other capuchin monkeys at the Serengeti Park in Hodenhagen, in a new area named “Mally-bu.” A zoo spokesperson says he’s “very clever.” — Read it at People Pets
