Cora was cowering in a back corner of a room at the Marin Humane Society in California after being surrendered. During her examination, the staff realized she’d had puppies, and convinced the person who surrendered her to bring them in. Cameras were rolling when a shelter worker reunited the puppies with Cora — and her whole personality changed. As soon as she realized what was happening, she started scampering around, excitedly greeting her puppies. The pups began trying to nurse before their mom had the chance to calm down. “Tears of joy all around at this happy reunion," the shelter wrote when it posted the video on its Facebook page Monday. Cora and her puppies, Carson, Branson, Moseley and Edith, were named for the characters on “Downton Abbey,” the hit series that ended Sunday. — Watch it at Tampa’s Fox 13
Officials are offering a $25,000 reward for information leading to the conviction of whoever killed 13 bald eagles last month. The birds were found on a Maryland farm in what Maryland Natural Resources police said was the biggest die-off of bald eagles in the state in 30 years. At the time, investigators thought the eagles might have eaten poisoned animal carcasses. They’ve now ruled out diseases. "Our investigation is now focused on human causes," said Catherine J. Hibbard, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. She said she couldn't release any more information to protect the investigation. — Read it at NBC News
A frog the size of a thumbnail has been discovered in a region of India that’s littered with garbage and devoid of vegetation. Scientists say the frog’s discovery proves the region nicknamed the Wastelands has ecological significance. The narrow-mouth frog has a call that sounds like that of a cricket. DNA tests confirmed the pale brown frog was a new species. The researchers, from the National University of Singapore, believe the new species should be listed as endangered. Their findings were published in the journal PLOS ONE. — Read it at Discovery News
A stubborn and scared Chihuahua hid from the Phoenix police — in the undercarriage of an officer’s patrol SUV. Lt. Tom Van Dorn was driving in a Phoenix neighborhood on Wednesday when he came across a pack of small dogs blocking the road, and honked his horn to get them out of the roadway. Most of them ran off, but a Chihuahua mix darted under his Tahoe SUV. Van Dorn quickly stopped and got out to check on the dog, who was in the engine block of his vehicle. The dog stayed there for about 20 minutes before being rescued with the help of Maricopa County Animal Care & Control. "He was just scared and just really didn't want to come out for us," Van Dorn said. It was later determined that the dog is a female, and she’s been nicknamed Tahoe. She’s staying with Maricopa County Animal Care’s shelter while officials try to find her owners, if she has any. If no one comes forward in 72 hours, she’ll be put up for adoption. — Read it at Phoenix’s ABC 15
In case you missed it, we have a series of must-see memes for you. Karen Zack, aka @teenybiscuit on Twitter, has been creating graphics showing photos of dogs and the foods they look like. You’d be surprised to see how much a Chihuahua’s face can look like a blueberry muffin, and a Labradoodle’s fur can look like fried chicken, and a puppy can curl up to look like a bagel. Zack’s work was trending on Twitter on Thursday and has been picked up by news outlets all over the country. — See photos at the Huffington Post
