A tiny kitten was stuck in a Los Angeles storm drain littered with trash for two days before a team of police officers and firefighters came to its rescue. The firefighters used hamburger to lure the crying kitten from its hiding space into a more open area, where they could get ahold of it. The scared cat nearly wiggled right out of a firefighter’s hands before he managed to get it safely into the back of a waiting police patrol car in the early morning hours on Tuesday. Despite its ordeal, the firefighters said the kitten appeared to be in good health, and now has a new home with LAPD officer Axcel Mannoury, who was on the scene. — Watch it at NBC Los Angeles
Cattle ranchers in South Dakota are trying to cope with the aftermath of a blizzard that struck 10 days ago, devastating their herds. The melting snow has revealed an estimated 100,000 dead cows. The cattle, who hadn’t yet grown out their winter coats and were still grazing in their summer pastures, were fully exposed to blinding snow and 70 mph winds. Rancher Scott Reder, who lost about 200 cattle, said the scene he found the day after the storm made him sick to his stomach. “We just wept," he said. "What can you do?" — Watch it at CBS News
Researchers have found that Spix’s disc-winged bats, who roost in rolled up leaves on plants in South America, use the leaves as a funnel to help them hear their roost-mates flying above. The unfurling leaves form a tube shape, but as they grow, they unfurl, so the bats can only roost for a day before they have to move to another leaf. Scientists found that the funneling effect allowed the bats inside the leaf to hear a call from outside at 10 decibels louder. But because not all frequencies of sound amplify equally, the boosted cries were distorted, said researcher Gloria Chaverri of Boston University. The study was published in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B. — Read it at Live Science
The Glee actress, who’s trying to move forward after losing her boyfriend and costar Cory Monteith in July, has someone new in her life. Michele announced on Twitter Tuesday that she’s adopted a small 8-year-old dog. "Today I would like to introduce you to Pearl. She's 8 years old and is my new little love … Welcome Pearl!" The proud mom then shared two more photos of her little girl posing at a photo shoot with her. This isn’t the first rescue for Michele. She once saved a litter of six kittens she found on the lot where Glee is filmed. She adopted two of them and found homes with her colleagues for the other four. — Read it at People Pets
The state is ready to start issuing license plates featuring everyone’s favorite cartoon Beagle, Snoopy. Already, 9,200 people have pledged to buy one of the $50 plates showcasing the Peanuts character. Revenue from the sales will benefit the California Cultural and Historical Endowment and fund museums statewide. “Snoopy is himself a cultural institution and having his partnership in support of our museums is sure to make a huge difference in keeping them financially strong," said assemblywoman Toni Atkins. — Read it at the Los Angeles Times
