Kai, a 10-month-old
German Shepherd, is back home with her family thanks to the quick thinking of
Upper Gwynedd Township, Pennsylvania, Police Officer Yin Young. The puppy’s owner, George Burns, called the police when Kai ran off from her home Saturday. After an unsuccessful search on foot, Young had an idea. He equipped his personal drone with a video camera and sent it flying from the police station. Within 20 minutes, the drone had found Kai in the nearby woods. Kai was then reunited with Burns, safe and sound. "We don't want the owner to get hurt unnecessarily looking for the dog,” explained Sergeant John Brinkman. He said the department might start using the drone when looking for missing children, too. — Read it at
A retiring 30-year veteran of the Marietta, Ohio, police force and its police chief are locked in a battle over the fate of the officer’s K9, Ajax. The officer, Matthew Hickey, says he offered to pay Ajax’s value, $3,500, in order for the
dog to retire with him. Ajax had worked with Hickey for four years, but isn’t old enough to retire himself. But he was told the
dog had to be treated as city property and auctioned. The story hit the media and an outcry ensued. A
GoFundMe account to help Hickey keep Ajax has raised more than $68,000 in four days — nearly 20 times more than the $3,500 amount. In a press conference Monday,
the police chief said the department had offered Hickey a resolution before the story made headlines, and that he could keep Ajax if he became an auxiliary officer. However, an update on the GoFundMe page Monday night said that Hickey hasn’t accepted that resolution and hasn’t been cleared by his doctor to return to any police position. The additional funds raised will go to a charity that provides ballistic vests to K9s.
Punxsutawney Phil, the country's most-recognized groundhog weatherman, had his big day before the cameras this morning in Pennsylvania. He didn't see his shadow, meaning he's calling for an early spring. Phil's forecast continues to get a lot of attention, despite the fact that he's actually been wrong 55 percent of the time in the last 30 years,
according to CNN. This was a big year for Phil, who made his 130th prediction at Gobbler's Knob in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. — Read it at
The talking porcupine has spoken. Teddy Bear thought long
and hard before digging in to his favorite treat — corn on the cob — from the
bucket marked with the Denver Broncos logo, choosing it over the Carolina
Panthers bucket. Teddy Bear, who lives at Zooniversity in Texas, has a pretty
impressive record as a prognosticator. He went four-for-four until he got it
wrong last year. We’ll see whether he’s back on track this year after Super
Bowl 50 on Sunday in California. — Watch it on YouTube
A storm named Gertrude that hit Northern Ireland Friday blew
open the door to Bumper’s cage, and landed him on the roof of the Woodbank House, a residential care home in Omagh, County
Tyrone. Firefighters were called to the rescue and got the rabbit down with
"one short extension ladder, one reach pole and one particularly tasty
carrot,” the Northern Ireland
Fire and Rescue Service wrote in a Facebook post. The Woodbank House is
relieved to have its pet back safely.
