April 21, 2014: We've scoured the Web to find the best and most compelling animal stories, videos and photos. And it's all right here.
A 5-pound bear cub arrived at Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care in California last week. Although little is known about where she came from, her caretakers say a Good Samaritan dropped her off at their offices when she became separated from her mother while still in her den. The cub is so young that she doesn’t have teeth yet and can’t walk, so she wouldn’t have survived in the wild, says her keeper Cheryl Millham. Named Tahoe, the 10-week-old bear wasn’t in bad shape when she was brought in. She’s being bottle-fed a special bear formula, but her keepers are being careful not to bond with her so she can be released into the wild when she’s big enough. “This little girl now will have the chance to grow up to be a healthy, normal little bear,” Millham says. “She’s a joy.” — Watch it from San Francisco’s KGO via Yahoo
A 7-year-old tabby named Puddy Cat was once ready to inherit a trust fund worth $450,000 from her owner, a 74-year-old Massachusetts woman. The “Puddy Cat Trust” in the woman’s will was meant to be used for the cat’s care after her owner's death, and the remaining funds were to go to animal welfare groups. But prosecutors accuse the woman’s neighbors, Randi Berkowitz, 63, and Patricia DiGiacomo, 58, of befriending the woman by offering to take care of her cat, and then raiding her financial accounts of $175,000. On Thursday, the two roommates pleaded not guilty to several charges in the case, including embezzlement, larceny and intimidation. The woman is currently in a nursing home while Puddy Cat is living in a kennel. — Read it at CNN
Kanzi the ape was already famous. The primate, who lives at the Great Ape Trust in Iowa, is renowned for his intelligence and even had an appearance on the Oprah Winfrey Show. But an amazing video clip of him from the BBC’s Monkey Planet has gone viral after airing last week in the U.K. In the clip, the bonobo collects dry brush, lights it with a match and toasts his own marshmallows on a skewer. — Watch it at Gawker
The Lutheran Church Charities’ Golden Retriever Comfort Dogs were there to help people after the Boston Marathon bombings in 2013. They returned several times during the year, and they have been in town to lend a paw for the first anniversary of the tragedy. They spent Easter Sunday visiting the First Lutheran Church of Boston, which is near the finish line of the race. “Had I not had them, I’m not sure how I’d fare. This is just love in a golden body,” said Aislynn Rodeghiero, who ran the marathon last year but couldn’t finish because of the bombings. She visited with the dogs on Saturday, and will be running the race again today. — Read it at the Los Angeles Times
Plus: Dogs have also been assisting survivors of the bombings who are learning to cope with disabilities. A black Labrador Retriever service dog named Rescue has been helping Jessica Kensky and Patrick Downes, a married couple who each lost a leg in the bombings. He not only assists them physically, but helps lift their spirits. "To have a dog like him around, you laugh 10, 20, 50 times more a day, and you can't help but have that lift the mood," says Patrick Downes. — Read it at NPR
This week, People magazine’s Most Beautiful issue hits the stands. But you can already see Grumpy Cat try to choose the Most Beautiful Cat. The 2-year-old feline can’t seem to keep her eyes open as she unhappily inspects the photos sent in by People readers of cats coveting the title with her owner, Tabatha Bundesen. — Watch it at People Pets
