July 25, 2013: We've scoured the Web to find the best and most compelling animal stories, videos and photos. And it's all right here.
Nemo, a 730-pound Hampshire pig, “loves people and has a great personality,” said his owner, George Goldner. So when Goldner noticed his 4-year-old pet was not eating and had little energy, he brought him to Cornell University’s Hospital for Animals in New York. There, Nemo was diagnosed with B-cell lymphoma. The doctors had never treated a pig for cancer, but Goldner asked them to try, and not to worry about the costs. Nemo’s managing veterinarian, Dr. Emily Barrell, worked with physicians across several fields to devise a plan for chemotherapy. So far, it looks like it worked. Four months after Nemo’s diagnosis, his clinical signs of cancer have disappeared, although little is know about his long-term prognosis. “He’s running around digging holes, eating pineapples, communicating vocally, and getting lots of love,” Goldner said. “The vets have cared for him with amazing dedication and thoughtfulness.” If Nemo continues to do well, he’ll be able to return home in September. — Read it from Reuters via Yahoo
It may weigh less than 2 ounces and measure less than a foot in length, but a new species of hero shrew recently found in Africa is believed to be one of the strongest mammals in the animal kingdom. With a spine that’s “massively reinforced,” the shrew can “leverage heavy objects, such as logs, enabling them to get to food that other animals cannot access,” said William Stanley, lead author of a study on the animal that was published in the journal Royal Society Biology Letters. The shrew, which was found in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, can also survive being squished. — Read it at Discovery News via Paw Nation
Despite a heavy rainstorm, about 130 wild horses made their traditional 5-minute swim from Assateague Island to nearby Chincoteague Island in Virginia on Wednesday. People who’d traveled from all over to watch the 88th annual event were drenched in an unexpected thunderstorm, as the ponies were herded by Saltwater Cowboys, many of whom are volunteer firefighters. None of the ponies were hurt in the swim. — See photos at the Washington Post
The cubs — two males and one female — were born to mom Ginger at Zoo Salzburg on June 28, and recently had a weight check. Thanks to great care from Ginger, the boys now weigh about 2.6 pounds each, and their sister is a little smaller, at just under 2 pounds. The triplets weighed about ½ pound each when they were born. Cheetahs are native to Africa and southwest Asia. While adult males live in social groups, adult females are solitary, which makes breeding in captivity a challenge for zoos. — Read it at Zooborns
The daughter of the late “Crocodile Hunter” Steve Irwin turned 15 this week, and everyone — including the animals — celebrated at the Australia Zoo in Queensland. Irwin lives at the zoo with her mom, Terri, and 9-year-old brother, Robert. “I'm feeling blessed to be spending my birthday with my wonderful friends and family @AustraliaZoo," Irwin Tweeted. While dedicated to carrying out her dad’s message of animal conservation, the teen is also an aspiring actress. She appeared in a TV movie this year. — Read it at People Pets
