Firefighters in Spokane, Washington, rescued a dog named Dana from the Spokane River on Wednesday afternoon. Dana, who had bolted from her home on Tuesday after being spooked by a thunderstorm, had fallen down a steep embankment and into the river. “It was an animal in distress,” said Assistant Fire Chief Brian Schaeffer. “The only way to rescue the animal safely was to treat it as we would a human.” Fortunately, Dana was wearing tags and was easily reunited with her owner, Mike McLaughlin, who said she is fine and resting quietly. “She’s pretty worn out,” hesaid. — Read it at The Spokesman-Review

To help bolster the population — and save the few that remain — the Texas Department of Transportationplans to install the state's first highway wildlife crossings for the wild cats. Eight underpasses will be incorporated into the expansion of Highway 106, at a cost of $1.4 million. Similar highway alterations elsewhere in America have been successful in helping other endangered wild cat populations. —Read it at National Geographic

Emily Henderson, home style expert and past winner of HGTV's "Design Star," got the job of a animal-lover’s lifetime when she was asked to redesign the Animal Haven shelter in New York City. Sponsored by Arm & Hammer’s Clump and Seal Cat Litter, the makeover focused on the cat area in the shelter. “I figured that if this cattery space was a bit happier and brighter that potential adopters might stay longer, get to know a cat more and then take that kitty home,” says Henderson in her blog. — Read it and see before and after photos at Style By Emily Henderson
