An employee at a tow lot in Kansas City, Mo., spotted a 3-month-old puppy in the front window of a car that had been in the lot since April 8. Dehydrated and emaciated, little Kia had survived for almost an entire month on scraps of McDonald’s food that she found in the car. Police are trying to track down the puppy’s owners, who will face criminal charges if they’re found. In the meantime, Kia is recovering at the KC Pet Project. "It's devastating to hear, and then it's inspiring to hear at the same time," said the shelter’s Tori Fugate. "Hearing how this little girl has lived in this car for this long in those conditions is just amazing." The terrier will be ready for adoption in 2 to 3 weeks, after she gains some weight. — Watch it at Missouri’s KHSB
A new report by Banfield Pet Hospital finds that dogs and cats in Colorado and Montana live longer than pets in other states. Pets in Louisiana and Mississippi have the shortest lifespans. Experts say the states that had pets who were the healthiest and had the longest lives also have the highest spay and neutering rates, more pets who live inside and are in regions with fewer infectious diseases such as heartworm and Lyme disease. — Read it at USA Today
Illegal poaching of critically endangered radiated and ploughshare tortoises on the island of Madagascar is “raging out of control,” according to the Wildlife Conservation Society. Although it was once taboo to harm the tortoises, poaching and smuggling has increased dramatically since the nation’s political crisis began in 2009. Just this year, more than 1,000 of the tortoises have been confiscated from smugglers. “Unless immediate action is taken to better protect the wild populations, their extinction is imminent," said James Deutsch, executive director of the Africa Program at WCS, in a statement. — Read it at Live Science
Two Masai giraffe calves were born within 10 days of each other at the Santa Barbara Zoo in California. Dane, a 6-foot, 3-inch male, was born to mom Audrey on April 18, and 6-foot Sunshine, a female, was born on April 28 to Betty Lou. The babies share the same dad, Michael. The two mothers have been very attentive to their little ones, but because Betty Lou is especially protective of Sunshine, her keepers are making sure the two are slowly and safely introduced to their herd. The two babies met for the first time in their yard on April 30. — Read it at Zooborns
The Internet’s loveable Grumpy Cat has apparently inspired dozens of artists in Alabama, who are taking part in the Grumpy Cat Art Project. The feline with the famous frown has been depicted in nearly every art form you can dream up for a show and online auction, including stained glass, jewelry, ceramic pottery and even a hooked rug. The auction runs from May 27 to 31, and the proceeds will go to the artists and to a children’s playground at the Lowe Mill Arts & Entertainment complex in Huntsville, Ala. — Read it at CNET
