An abandoned puppy has a new start at life thanks to rock singer Meat Loaf. Last week, after a rehearsal for a performance in Albuquerque, New Mexico, the singer’s crew spotted someone leaving a young puppy behind a dumpster. They came to her rescue, had her examined by a veterinarian and named the “beautiful baby girl” Little Ms. Karma. Not wanting to leave her behind at a shelter or with a stranger, Meat Loaf, 68, and his crew took the dog on the road with them for a few days. But, they quickly found her a home on a “big ole ranch” with a member of “the extended Meat Loaf family,” according to a post on the singer’s Facebook page, where he shared photos of the cute puppy. “She was homed with 'family' and we will always know that she's ok,” the musician wrote on Facebook. — Read it at Oklahoma’s Fox23
A rare black rhino was born at Britain’s Howletts Wild Animal Park to first-time mom Damara on October 1, and made his debut this week. He’s the first of his species to be born in the park’s 40-year history, and his birth was caught on video. “The baby rhino is currently doing really well,” said a spokesman for The Aspinall Foundation, which owns the park. “Although he is starting to [venture] out a lot more, he is staying close to Mum, who is protective and cautious with him.” Black rhino populations have been decimated due to illegal poaching. There are only an estimated 2,500 of the critically endangered animals left in the wild. — See photos at the U.K.’s Daily Mail and see more cute baby animal photos
Residents of Los Angeles County’s unincorporated areas will now have to spay or neuter and microchip their cats. The mandate was passed by the county’s supervisors Tuesday, and is meant to help lessen the number of cats who are euthanized in county animal shelters. The county already mandates the same for dogs. County residents can get a $50 voucher to put toward the cost of having their cats spayed or neutered until the first $125,000 of funding is spent. After that, the county will continue to issue the vouchers to low-income cat owners. — Read it at the Los Angeles Times
A woman on a motorcycle who was wearing a GoPro camera came to the aid of a tiny orange kitten who was in the middle of a busy intersection. In a dramatic YouTube video posted Monday, the kitten is narrowly missed by speeding trucks before the motorcyclist manages to stop traffic and run out into the street to scoop him up. She wrote on reddit that the kitten appeared to fall out of a red car with a corporate logo on it. She tried to contact the company but hasn’t heard back from anyone looking for the kitten. She suspects the kitten may have been a stray who’d climbed into the undercarriage of the car without the driver knowing, and fell out on the street. There was no word on where the rescue took place. The motorcyclist named the 1-month-old kitten Skids and has had him checked by a vet — and she’s planning to keep him. — Watch it at the Huffington Post
