April 12, 2012: We've scoured the Web to find the best and most compelling animal stories, videos and photos. And it's all right here.
It didn’t take police in Toledo, Ohio, long to find the man who they believe put six English Bulldog mix puppies in a suitcase and left it in an alley — the luggage tag with his contact information was still attached. Now he faces animal abandonment charges, and the adorable 4-week-old puppies are doing well at the Toledo Area Humane Society. The shelter is looking for someone to foster the mom and all of her puppies until they’re old enough to be adopted out. — Read it at Fox Toledo and don’t miss this photo of them in the Toledo Blade
Cuddly Catz, a new program at a Washington state prison, places cats who need a foster home with prisoners. The cats in turn foster compassion in the inmates, and have a soothing effect. "It makes your soft side come out," said one inmate. — Read it at the Seattle Times
It will take months to know whether the 10-day-old Mongoose Lemur born at the Sacramento Zoo is a boy or a girl. For now, the tiny newborn is clinging to mom’s waist as she moves about her enclosure. — See photos at Zooborns
When a Chicago woman died, she left all of her $1.3 million estate to animal charities, but her will instructed that any animals she had at the time of her death should be euthanized. “She was so afraid that if something happened to her that the cat would not be taken care of and she’d go to another abusive home,” said the woman’s neighbor. The Fifth Third Bank, which was the executor of the will, stepped in and was able to find a home for her friendly 11-year-old cat, Boots, at a cage-free sanctuary. — Watch it at CBS Chicago
Piper, a Chihuahua, and Boo, a Pomeranian, have big plans for the future: the two will wed next month, in an event meant to bring awareness to animal adoption. For now, the pups have their paws full with preparations, including being fitted for custom-made attire at the famed Kleinfeld bridal shop in New York. "At least the dogs don't complain," said the shop’s alterations manager. — Read it at the Wall Street Journal
