He might have been in the minor league, but Chase, a Golden Retriever, had a major league impact in his 13 years. The dog, who served for 10 years as bat boy for the New York Yankees AA team, the Trenton Thunder of New Jersey, passed away on Monday after suffering from cancer and arthritis. Fortunately, the team got the chance to see Chase off in style when they held a retirement party for him during Friday night’s game. They showed the crowd a 4-minute tribute video of Chase’s big moments, including a trip to Yankee Stadium, and handed out Chase bobbleheads to the first 2,000 fans to arrive at the game. “He just absolutely loved to be out there on the field,” said Eric Lipsman, the team’s vice president of corporate sales and Chase’s owner. The beloved dog’s son, Derby, will carry on his legacy at the Thunder’s games. — Read it at USA Today
After reviewing previous studies on Toxoplasma gondii, a parasite that can be found in cat feces, a team of researchers at Johns Hopkins University Medical Center in Maryland say that it could be a significant public health problem that's more widespread than previously thought. The single-celled organism creates infectious agents called oocysts, which can infect pregnant women and have been linked by previous studies to some mental illness in otherwise healthy people. "I put together the data we have and found it disturbing," said study researcher E. Fuller Torrey. About 1 percent of cats carry the infectious oocysts at any time. While most people don’t have long-term effects, more research is needed to find why some people do. — Read it at Live Science via Yahoo
While most U.S. dogs have their origins in Europe, there are a handful of dog breeds with American roots. DNA analysis shows that Inuit sled dogs, the Eskimo dog and the Greenland dog, all of whom hail from Alaska and nearby areas, are “all equally American,” said Peter Savolainen. Savolainen is co-author of the study, which was published in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B. These dogs “probably migrated together with the humans that entered America from Asia via the Bering Strait,” Savolainen said. “These humans became today’s Indians and Inuits.” — Read it at Discovery News
Visitors at Chicago’s Shedd Aquarium are getting the opportunity to watch a rockhopper penguin chick thrive. At nearly a month old, the baby penguin’s experienced parents are caring for it on exhibit. The little one is eating, gaining weight and getting to know the other birds in the exhibit. Mom and dad are busy taking care of their chick, splitting their parenting responsibilities in equal shifts. Keepers don’t yet know the 2.2-pound hatchling’s gender. The newborn will learn to eat on its own before growing waterproof plumage and working on its swimming skills.
The former ‘N Sync star shared a photo on Instagram on Monday where he’s giving a wink like the little dog with one eye in his arms. "We have tons of fun presents for whoever finds a great home for him!" Bass wrote about Buddy. "Yes he has one eye! So cool!" Buddy isn’t the first dog Bass has helped out. The host of SiriusXM radio show Dirty Pop uses his platform to try to find a home for one dog he deems a “Lucky Puppy” each week. — Read it at People Pets
