Gobi Found in China

Earlier this month, we told you the incredible story of a little stray dog who spontaneously joined in a 155-mile ultramarathon across the Gobi desert in China in June and became inseparable from runner Dion Leonard. Leonard lives in Scotland, and as soon as the race was over, he started making plans to bring Gobi home with him — but knew it would take about four months to get her through medical checks and quarantine. There was an outpouring of support from all over the world, but earlier this week, Leonard got word that Gobi had disappeared from the home of a friend she was staying with. He immediately flew to China to join a search for her but feared they’d never find her. Luckily, a local man recognized her in a park, brought her home and called Leonard. “When we got there, I walked through the door and she came running towards me and ran around my legs and jumped up on me. It was love again at immediate sight,” said Leonard. He says he now plans to stay in China with Gobi until he gets the clearance to bring her home. — Read it at the U.K.’s BBC News

“Sleeping Beauty” Frog Discovered in Peru

Researchers in Peru were surprised to find a little brown frog with bright red legs. They’ve spent the last two years confirming that the species, which measures less than an inch long, is new to science. It was named Pristimantis pulchridormientes, or the sleeping beauty rain frog, in reference to the mountain range where it was found in Tingo Maria National Park. Locals describe the range as looking like a sleeping woman. The description of the new species was published in the journal ZooKeys. — Read it at National Geographic

Firefighters Save Blind, Deaf Dog

Sam, an 11-year-old Cocker Spaniel, is lucky to be alive after tumbling into a 40-foot well near his Maryland home that was open for repairs. The blind and deaf dog’s owner dropped a ladder into the well so he was able to at least climb out of the water while Prince Fredrick Volunteer Firefighter Team rushed to the scene on Tuesday. The crew set up a rope system and lowered a firefighter into the well. He picked up the scared dog and they were both pulled to the surface. Thankfully Sam was out of the hole within 30 minutes and didn’t suffer any injuries. — Read it at People Pets

Escaped Cat Found Under Seat on Plane

As passengers on an Air Canada flight were getting ready to disembark in Vancouver this week, a couple who was traveling with two cats in carriers realized that one had escaped during the flight. One of the flight attendants walked down the aisle asking if anyone had seen a cat, and was surprised when one passenger nonchalantly said yes. The man surprised even the woman sitting next to him when he said the cat was right at his feet. The friendly cat had no problem with the flight attendant collecting him to return him to his owner. “Anyone who’s ever tried to pick up a cornered cat knows they can be a little feisty but not this one,” said passenger Kath Thompson, who snapped a photo of the runaway kitty and the flight attendant who found him. — Read it at Canada’s CTV News
