Caroline Golon, the human behind popular humor blog Romeo the Cat, shares stories of pet owners who have gone the extra mile for their pets in this series, The Things We Do for Love.
When Betsy Decillis goes out of town, whoever watches her cat should be prepared to do a little work. Decillis leaves extensive instructions on food, playtime and snuggle time to make sure Cesare “the Super Kitten” is happy while she’s gone.
The Columbus, Ohio, resident is a self-proclaimed “ultimate crazy cat lady.” When she first met Mike, her boyfriend of more than five years, she told him, “I made a commitment to Cesare first. If you have a problem with the cat, I’m going to choose the cat.”
Fortunately, Cesare and Mike hit it off, and Mike stayed. Now the three live happily together, under one roof.
When Decillis travels for work, Mike is home to watch the 7-year-old cat. But when the couple leaves town together, it’s time for a pet sitter — and some in-depth direction from Decillis about how to properly care for Cesare.
With a laugh, Decillis shares excerpts from the letter she left for her recent cat sitter.
“For food, he gets a handful at breakfast and at dinner. Since you guys are only coming over once, give him a small handful in each side of his dish. I’m hoping that will encourage him to slow down and maybe eat only one portion at a time.”
