The Things We Do for Love: "I Went From Cat Averse to Cat Obsessed"

Duke has become the most pampered member of the family.

Caroline Golon, the human behind popular humor blog Romeo the Cat, shares stories of pet owners who have gone the extra mile for their pets in this series, The Things We Do for Love.

Tiffany Takac of Woodland Hills, Calif., didn’t like cats. When she and her husband, Mike, promised their two daughters they could get a pet, Takac even declared, “Absolutely no cats.”

But after a friend found a 7-week-old white kitten stuck in a tree near the school, she asked Takac if she would consider adopting the cat. “I took one look at that kitten with his sparkly blue eyes and thought maybe I could give him a shot,” she says. “I guess I knew he was special from the beginning.”

After a shopping spree at the pet store for supplies, Takac brought the little one home to meet the family. The girls were overjoyed, and her husband was smitten. They named him Duke.

Still, Takac wasn’t convinced she’d made the right decision. But the next day when the family returned home after running errands, Duke was waiting patiently for them at the door. Her heart melted. “That’s the moment I fell in love with him,” she says. “He had me at meow!”

A Favorite Member of the Family

Today, Duke may well be the favorite member of the Takac household. The family dotes on him, and he’s included in every family activity. Because Duke loves dripping water, the family happily indulges him in a morning ritual — spending a few minutes in the bathtub with the water running.

Duke even has his own wardrobe, including football jerseys. “I never thought in a million years I would be buying clothes for a cat. But here I am!” she says.

The family rarely leaves Duke at home when they travel. They simply purchase Duke a plane ticket and bring him along.

Takac even plans to buy Duke a leash so he can go on walks with her. “People take their dogs everywhere. Why can’t I take my cat?” she asks.
