Safety comes first, but fun is a close second.

Caroline Golon, the human behind popular humor blog Romeo the Cat, shares stories of pet owners who have gone the extra mile for their pets in this series, The Things We Do for Love.

Michele Maskaly of Lake George, N.Y., says her 4-year-old Chihuahua, Toby, is “300 percent spoiled,” but she doesn’t mind bringing him wherever she goes or giving in to his unusual doggy demands.

Always Together

Maskaly, who often travels to New York City for work, takes Toby along with her. “He stays with my dad in New Jersey while I’m working so he isn’t by himself,” she says.

The New Jersey house is set up for Toby’s comfort. “The couches are covered in fleece blankets for Toby because he loves them,” Maskaly says.

Maskaly’s friends know that she and Toby are a package deal. When the group takes road trips, they automatically make room in the backseat for Toby’s crate. “If I’m coming, Toby’s coming,” Maskaly says.

That includes bringing Toby when she goes on boating or kyaking excursions. Maskaly says Toby loves being on the water. Safety’s a priority so the little dog always wears a life jacket and makes friends wherever he goes. “People come up beside us just to say hi to Toby,” Maskaly says. “He loves all the attention.”
