Fairway Animal Hospital Staff Profiles

Dr. Hires Gage

D.V.M.
Dr. Hires Gage grew up in Kansas City, Missouri, graduating from Southwest High School in 1969. His interest in veterinary medicine originated from working summers on his grandfather's dairy farm near Lawrence, Kansas during junior high and high school. Hires began college at the University of Kansas, but transferred to the University of Missouri-Columbia after two and a half years in order to pursue a career in veterinary medicine.  He received a B.S. in Agriculture in 1973, and his D.V.M. in 1977. Late in vet school his interest shifted from large animals to companion animals. After graduation, Hires accepted an associate position in a small animal hospital in Las Vegas where he spent two years there before receiving an opportunity to return to Kansas City. He joined Fairway Animal Hospital in 1979 and purchased the practice in 1981.

Dr. Gage is a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), KVMA, KCVMA, and American Animal Hospital Association. He has served two terms as president of the KCVMA. In the community, Dr. Gage has been on the board of Children's Center for the Visually Impaired, and is presently on the board of Pets for Life.

Hires and his wife Gail have been married for 33 years. They have two children, Bailey, age 29, who graduated from veterinary school at Kansas State University in May 2014. After doing an internship in a large veterinary specialty practice in San Francisco, she became an associate in a mixed animal practice in northern Maine. Logan, age 26, currently works in a local bank and is contemplating a return to college to attain his undergraduate degree. Three pets complete the Gage household. They are Doris, a red Lab; Pookie, a Cockalier; and Margaret, a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel.

When away from Fairway Animal Hospital, Dr. Gage enjoys playing golf, watching sports, fishing, hunting upland game and waterfowl and vacationing with his family.

Nancy McClain

DMV
Dr. Nancy McClain is the newest addition to the professional staff at Fairway Animal Hospital. She recently earned her D.V.M. degree from the University of Missouri where she graduated as a member of Phi Zeta, the honor society of veterinary medicine that recognizes the top 25% of the senior class. Nancy was the recipient of the 2012 Miss America Scholarship - an award chosen by classmates for demonstration of leadership in college organizations and activities, and promotion of the veterinary profession through community service and academic achievement. She was also awarded the Ives Cardiff Scholarship for demonstrating aptitude and compassion for the human-animal bond. Throughout veterinary school, Dr. McClain was fortunate enough to work as a research assistant at the Research Center for Human-Animal Interaction. She is a member of the AVMA and KCVMA.

Nancy grew up in St. Louis as the youngest of three girls. She attended St. Joseph’s Academy and later went to the University of Missouri to pursue a degree in Biology. Nancy was a Chi Omega at Mizzou where she enjoyed participating in sorority functions and served as the chapter’s social chair for a year. As a freshman undergraduate student, Nancy’s best friend introduced her to her now husband, Pat.

Dr. McClain recently got married and moved to the area. She and Pat reside in Midtown with their goofy boxer mix, Stella. In her spare time, Nancy enjoys spending time with friends and family, trying new restaurants, playing tennis, attempting to practice yoga, and jogging with her dog. Her areas of special interest include cardiology and neurology. Nancy is thrilled to be joining such a great community and looks forward to getting to know the area better.

Dr. Steve White

D.V.M., D.A.B.V.P.
Dr. Steve White joined Fairway Animal Hospital in 1985 after receiving his D.V.M from Kansas State University. He grew up in Kansas City, and attended Rockhurst High School, where he made his decision to pursue veterinary medicine as a career. As a lifelong resident of Kansas City he felt fortunate to be able to return to his hometown and join the well-respected Fairway Animal Hospital practice. In 1992, he attained his certification as a Diplomat of the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners. He is also a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), KVMA, KCVMA, and the American Animal Hospital Association.

Dr. White met his wife, Lisa in 1988. Shortly after they met, Lisa brought Bridget, her long haired dachshund to him for puppy shots. Lisa thought that since Bridget approved of Steve, he must be a pretty good guy. A year and a half later, Steve and Lisa were married and began to raise a family. They have two daughters, Kimberly and Kathryn, both are graduates of Benedictine college. Kimberly is a Child Life Specialist at Children’s Mercy Hospital and  Kathryn is a nurse. Lisa’s vocation as wife and mother continues to be the joy of her life second only to her Catholic faith.

Currently, Steve and his family live in Prairie Village with Leo and Petey, two rescue dachshunds. During his free time, Steve enjoys being with his family, woodworking, fly fishing, reading and studying scripture and theology. He is currently in his final year of a five year formation program to become a deacon in the Archdiocese of Kansas City in Kansas. The Whites are also active members of their parish family of Cure of Ars Catholic Church.
