Sandhills Veterinary Hospital Staff Profiles
John Thomas, DVMDr. John Thomas graduated magna cum laude from the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine in 2001, after previously graduating phi beta kappa from Wofford College with a degree in biology. He practiced for several years in a large veterinary hospital in Atlanta, before he and his wife decided to return home to South Carolina to raise their family.
He was a veterinarian with the U.S. Department of Defense at Ft. Jackson for five years where he enjoyed working with active duty and retired military families as well as the military working dogs and their handlers. He and his wife, Stephanie, and their two children live in Blythewood along with their own four-legged family members.
Dr. Thomas, who is a certified state constable, also enjoys volunteering with the Richland County and City of Columbia sheriff and police departments. Show More
Elizabeth Rivers, DVMDr. Elizabeth Rivers grew up in Pickens, SC, a small town located in the upstate of SC. She spent much of her childhood dreaming of becoming a veterinarian and spent the next 18 years achieving that goal. She has been working in veterinary clinics for 7 years. She started as a kennel assistant and then became a veterinary assistant. In 2009, she earned her Bachelor of Arts in molecular biology from Colgate University in Hamilton, New York. She graduated magna cum laude and was a member of Beta Beta Beta honor society.
At the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine, she focused on small animal medicine and surgery and was a member of Phi Zeta honor society. In 2014 she graduated cum laude with her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree. She is a member of the South Carolina Veterinary Medical Association, American Veterinary Medical Association, and American Animal Hospital Association.
Dr. Rivers' interests include preventative care, soft tissue surgery, and behavior. She lives in Columbia, SC with her husband and their dog and cat. Her interests outside veterinary medicine include spending time with her family, volleyball and woodworking. Show More
