Local Medical Issues
K-9 FLU ALERT!
Many of our clients have asked about the threat of canine influenza to their dogs. Canine flu is a highly contagious respiratory virus with nearly all dogs that are exposed becoming infected within a few days after exposure. This disease is highly contagious, dogs that are around other dogs (boarding, grooming, dog shows, dog parks, contact iwth neighbors' dogs) are at increased risk.
About 80% of exposed dogs will go on to develop signs. Typical symptoms resemble those of kennel cough: a persistent cough (often accompanied by a nasal discharge). Some dogs go on to develop pneumonia and can become critically ill.
A new vaccine is available that can help reduce ths risk. Please call our office to discuss if your dog would benefit from the influenza vaccine.
Abbott's AlphaTRAK monitoring system is available for regulating blood glucose levels for our special needs diabetic patients. Ease in testing and measuring blood glucose will help your furry companion maintain a better quality of life.
Fleas and ticks can still thrive in the winter months; fleas want a warm environment and can take up residence in your home. Ticks become active during unseasonably warm days. Both are very common in our area. One female flea may lay up to 2,000 eggs in her lifetime. A single infected deer tick can inflict Lyme disease on pets and family members Fleas and ticks may pose a very real threat to the health and comfort of your pets. In addition to extreme discomfort, fleas and ticks can also cause serious health problems in pets and people. Preventatives are important for your familys health. Ask our veterinarians how to protect your pets from fleas and ticks.
