Dr. Kathy WendtHospital Director
Dr. Kathy Wendt founded Sumner Veterinary Hospital in 1983, she is the Hospital Director and a staff veterinarian. In 2000 she launched It’s a Dog’s World, a world-class training and agility center on the campus of Sumner Veterinary Hospital. She was raised on a cattle ranch in Texas and fell in love with animals. She was compelled early on to commit her life to helping animals and the people that love and value them. Dr. Wendt is committed to continuing education and averages over 60 hours of intensive veterinary medical courses every year. She is an active member in many industry organizations including: WSVMA, AVMA and AAHA. Dr. Wendt has received specialized training in rehabilitation medicine from the Canine Rehabilitation Institute and has used this knowledge to build a cutting-edge rehabilitation and conditioning program for Sumner Veterinary Hospital. She lives in the Tacoma-area with her husband and their four dogs: Gidget, Wiki, Bug and Flirt. She enjoys the outdoors and competing her dogs in agility competitions.

Dr. Art KhachatryanMedical Director
Dr. Khachatryan is the Medical Director and enjoys practicing diverse aspects for veterinary medicine and has special interest in neurology, surgery, emergency and critical care. Dr. Khachatryan is also proficient in treating exotic pets (guinea pigs, rabbits, ferrets and pocket pets). Every day he looks forward to the opportunities to enrich and help grow the beautiful and healthy bond between pets and their owners by combining his passion for veterinary medicine and love of animals.
Dr. Khachatryan always strives for knowledge and regularly attends continuing education courses, including orthopedic surgeries of the hip and stifle joints, endoscopy, etc. He studied acupuncture at Peaceable Acupuncture Clinic in Seattle and has great respect and interest in homeopathy and other alternative medicines. He appreciates being part of a team of veterinarians and support staff that values the dynamics of the human-animal bond. In his spare time Dr. Khachatryan enjoys hiking in the beautiful northwest, swimming and practicing Aikido. He has two cats that always teach him a thing or two about life.

Dr. Stephen UhlerSenior Veterinarian
Dr. Uhler has been in practice for 37 years, and has been with Sumner Veterinary Hospital for the past 18 years. Dr. Uhler enjoys all forms of medical practice at Sumner Veterinary Hospital including: routine health care, cancer therapy, basic and complicated soft tissue surgery, orthopedic surgery, routine dentistry and advanced dental techniques. Dr. Uhler has thousands of hours of post-graduate training in medicine, surgery, dentistry, sonography and echocardiography, and orthopedic surgery, along with certification in canine rehabilitation. In his personal time Dr. Uhler enjoys being with his wife, children and grandchildren. He is active in church leadership, likes to garden, read historical novels and draw.
