Local Medical Issues

Due to our climate and geographical location, there are several health issues that are a primary concern for our pets.

Heartworm disease is a concern because of our large mosquito population. Mosquitoes carry heartworm disease from pet to pet, and even our indoor cats are at risk for being infected. Heartworm disease can be prevented by giving our dogs and cats a monthly dose of heartworm preventative medication.

Tick-borne disease such as Lyme disease, anaplasmosis and ehrlichiosis are also a health risk in our area. Vaccination for Lyme disease is available, but it is extremely important that our pets are protected from tick infestations by using a topical medication such as Frontline on a monthly basis.

Leptospirosis is a very serious bacterial disease that can cause liver and kidney failure in our pets. It is also transmissible to humans, and can cause very serious illness. It is transmitted by soil and water contaminated by the urine of carrier animals such as deer, moles, voles, other rodents, skunk, raccoons and livestock. Drinking, swimming in, walking through or playing in contaminated areas can spread this disease to our pets. A vaccine against the most prevalent types of leptospirosis is available and highly recommended for dogs in our area.
