Hillary Hess, LVT

Licensed Veterinary Technician

Hillary Hess is originally from Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. After earning a bachelor's degree in biology from Gettysburg College in 2000, she began her career in veterinary medicine as an assistant, but soon began classes at Cedar Valley College to become a licensed technician. She moved to Richmond in 2003 and joined a small animal practice where she remained for the next six years, while also continuing her veterinary technology education. She graduated and earned her license in 2007.  Hillary has a special interest in surgery and internal medicine aspects of animal nursing and hopes to specialize in veterinary anesthesia in the near future.

Hillary and her husband, Ryan, live in the West End with their two daughters, Bristol & Luca. When not working, she enjoys running, reading, vacations to the Outer Banks, and occasionally tries to learn golf.

Dr. April Rice

Veterinarian

Dr. April Rice was born and raised in Panama City, Florida, where her love and compassion for animals blossomed while working as an assistant in a small animal clinic and a zookeeper at a local zoo. She went on to attend veterinary school at the University of Florida, specializing in avian and exotic animal medicine. While in veterinary school she worked at several zoological parks including Disney's Animal Kingdom and the Kansas City Zoo. She moved to Richmond in 2005 after graduating with her Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine. She has been practicing exotic and companion animal internal medicine and surgery in the Richmond area ever since.

Dr. Rice and her husband Brandon reside in Bon Air with their two sons Ethan and Cayman. Their animal children include two dogs, Farley and Elvis, two cats, Blue and Slinky, two poison dart frogs, numerous fish, and Cornflake the corn snake. Her interests include spending time with her family, hiking, water sports and traveling.

Dr. Sara White

Veterinarian/Owner

Dr. Sara White was born in Colchester, England where she lived for 10 years and became an avid fan of James Herriot. She spent the rest of her childhood in Mclean, Virginia. After completing a bachelor of science degree from James Madison University in 1992 she attended Virginia Tech Veterinary School and graduated with a Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine in 1996. She spent the first five years as a veterinarian in a small animal practice in Arlington, Virginia. During this time she volunteered at the D.C. humane society and helped start a mobile spay-neuter service. She moved to Richmond in 2000 and worked at West End Veterinary Hospital. After the birth of her first daughter she decided to become a relief veterinarian and practiced all over the Richmond metropolitan area up until the opening of Winterfield Veterinary Hospital. Her interests include internal medicine, pain management and geriatric care.

Dr. White has been married to her husband Gary since 2001. She and Gary reside in the West End with their three daughters, Lily, Sophie, and Addison. Their four legged children include a Labrador, a Newfoundland, and two cats. Her interests include running, skiing, dining out and traveling.
