Sometimes, having an ugly mug pays off. For one unseemly dog from the United Kingdom, it pays $1,000.

Mugly the Chinese Crested beat out 28 other competitors at the 24th Annual World's Ugliest Dog contest, held Friday in Petaluma, Calif. The rescue dog's name is a hybrid of the phrase "ugly mug," and we don't think that moniker needs any explaining.

The canine beauty king (hey, beauty is in the eye of the beholder!) is hairless, except for some wiry whiskers and one white eyebrow. Chinese Cresteds traditionally excel at this event — a three-time winner from 2003 to 2005 was of the same breed, and last year's winner, Yoda, was a Chinese Crested-Chihuahua mix.

The contest drew some serious competition this year, with dogs named Handsome Hector, Creature, Icky and Spam-O-Rama vying for the title, according to a press release. Mugly also competed against two previous winners, Rascal and Princess Abby. But in the end, this four-legged stunner walked away with the prize money, a photo shoot, a year's supply of dog cookies and, most importantly, pride in his ugly mug.
