The baby’s name means “peanut” in Malagasy, the national language of her native country. She’s the fourth offspring for her 12-year-old mom, Almirena, from the Los Angeles Zoo, and 16-year-old dad, Caligula, who’s from the Duke Lemur Center.
Kapika joins her two sisters, Martine, 2, and Sophie, 3, at the zoo’s primate house.
Sifakas are known for their long, frog-like legs, which they can use to jump 30 feet from one tree to another. They’re among the many types of lemurs facing the danger of extinction in the wild because of habitat loss on their native island.
