New Law Requires That Military Dogs Return to U.S. to Retire

The annual defense spending bill signed by President Obama Wednesday night includes a policy change to help military dogs. The legislation requires that military dogs return to the U.S. to be retired, and gives their handlers the first chance to adopt them. Previously, the dogs were often retired while overseas; this meant that they were no longer eligible for military transportation back to the U. S., making it difficult for their handlers to get them home. “This is a momentous day for all veterans,” said Dr. Robin Ganzert, president and CEO of the American Humane Association, which fought for the changes. “We applaud Congress and the President for passing and signing the bill with the language we provided and stepping up for our brave K-9 Battle Buddy teams who have benefited and will continue to benefit from their service together.” — Read it at AKC.org
