We’ve had it up to our over-the-knee boots with the rains of El Nino and the snow drifts of winter storm Jonas. Sure, we love a faux-fur-trimmed parka as much as the next gal, but we’re ready to lighten things up with looks that are sure to put a spring in our step once temperatures rise.
While models, designers, editors and other trendsetters flock to New York Fashion Week to preview what we’ll be wearing next fall, we’re letting our sense of fashion go to the dogs — in the most stylish of ways. We’re taking a cue from some of the most sartorially savvy pups on Instagram, whom we spotted sporting spring’s most wearable trends.
Get ready to give your chunky turtlenecks and puffer coats the boot. It’s time to clear some room in your closet for these 10 trendsetting spring looks.
Shoulders Above the Rest
The fashion industry is known to be fickle, and this season,
designers really gave the cold
shoulder. Flashes of above-the-collarbone
skin highlighted nearly every runway show, with models donning
off-the-shoulder tops, cutout
gowns and asymmetrical necklines aplenty. Gizmo, a Brussels Griffon, nails
the bare-shouldered silhouette — sassy head tilt and all.
Pajama Dressing
With a robe that cozy, it doesn’t look like Samson, a Goldendoodle, will be
leaving bed anytime soon, but spring’s boudoir-inspired slip dresses and lacy
little numbers are wide awake and ready to leave the bedroom. Pull off pajama
dressing with panache by pairing a silky pj top with more structured jeans
and black pumps. Satiny
sheaths need not be reserved for sleeping, but maintain your modesty by layering
a simple T-shirt underneath.
Stripes Are Stars
AsGeordi La Corgi illustrates, you
can never go wrong with a classic stripe. But, of-the-moment stripes have
drifted nautical miles away from what we’ve seen in seasons past. Spring 2016
runways banished fine lines in favor of supersized,
bold, graphic patterns. So, whether wearing a boatneck top or a look-at-me
floor-length number, as they say, go big or go home.
The Love Affair Lives On
The romantic styles that waltzed their way onto the fashion
scene this
past fall have lingered into the spring, but the girlie looks have grown up
a bit. This time around, puffed
sleeves and high collars are coupled with flats, shorter
hemlines and relaxed silhouettes, giving dresses a decidedly unfussy feel.
Not the girlie type? Just hint at romance with a lace top tucked beneath a more
structured blazer or moto jacket. That easy-does-it approach is certainly
working for Toast, a Cavalier
King Charles Spaniel who couldn’t look more lovely.
Anything-but-Basic White Shirt
Menswear
Dog, a fashion-forward Shiba
Inu, knows that one can never go wrong with a classic oxford shirt. But, isn’t it time we gave the borrowed-from-the-boys look a flatteringly feminine
update? To upgrade your button-down for 2016, opt for a dramatic
shirttail, down-to-there
draping or cascading
ruffles. Not-so-basic white has never felt so right.
Latin Love
Fashion models could have
been mistaken for flamenco dancers on many of the spring
2016 runways. From brocade
jackets to floral detailing, all in rich shades of red, some of this
season’s sultriest styles looked oh-so-Latin. If the ornate fabrics and bold
colors of this matador-inspired trend seem a bit too much for your everyday
look, go for subtler, Spanish-inspired touches with an embroidered clutch or tassel-adorned
heels. Marnie, a Shih Tzu who puts her own
spin on the trend, couldn’t look more bella.
Orange Crush
This spring, consider orange your antidote to the
dark-colored wool coats that dotted winter’s snow-covered sidewalks. Like a
jolt of vitamin C, the happy hue was everywhere
on the runways, enlivening otherwise demure lace dresses and pleated
skirts. Remix prefers his
pop of color in the form of a hoodie, but this season you can’t go wrong however you slice your orange.
Sole Mates
Feet will rediscover their
long-lost love — comfort! — in spring’s flat and cozy footwear. Make like Bleecker, the
oh-so-fab Frenchie,
and step out of your toe-torturing stilettos and into a pair of comfy velvet
slippers or of-the-moment
mules. What you’ll lose in height, you’ll make up for in walkability and
spring style points.
The Finishing Touches
This season’s “it”
earrings are lobe-busting, and the handbags
are half-moon-shaped and more graphic than ever, but it’s the necklaces that
have us all choked up. Chokers, like the one bedecking Iggy Joey, an Italian Greyhound,
were everywhere on the runways. From simple,
sculptural styles to much more ornate beaded numbers, these statement
makers will add an exclamation point to your off-duty outfits.
No. 1 Fashion Trend of Spring 2016: You Do You
A look that’s always in style?
Wearing what makes you feel your best — regardless of the season at hand or the
trends dominating the runways. After all, remember that no matter what you have
on, at least to that furry
bundle of love at your feet, you look pretty perfect.
