Hero Pit Bull Rescues Owner From Train’s Path

"We saved Lilly, and Lilly saved my mom's life," said David Lanteigne, a Boston police officer. When Lanteigne’s mother fell unconscious onto train tracks last week, 8-year-old Lilly dragged her to safety, suffering injuries herself to save her owner.

Lilly is expected to recover and Lanteigne says he hopes the Pit Bull’s story will inspire other people to adopt a dog from a shelter. — Read it at ABC News

Pet Food Recall Expands

Another pet food brand has been added to the list of recalled foods due to a risk of salmonella contamination. Solid Gold is recalling its WolfClub Large Breed Puppy Food and its WolfKing Large Breed Adult Dog Food. Those foods are the latest in a recall that has included many foods produced or coproduced by Diamond Pet Foods. Those brands include: Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover’s Soul, Country Value, Diamond, Diamond Naturals, Premium Edge, Professionals, 4Health, Taste of the Wild, Apex, Kirkland Signature/Kirkland Signature Nature’s Domain and Canidae. The Centers for Disease Control advises pet owners to wash their hands after handling pet food to avoid contamination. No illness in dogs has been reported, but 14 humans have reported illness after handling the company's dry dog food.

Mother Duck Stops Traffic to Save Chicks

When her babies fell into a storm drain alongside an Oklahoma highway, their mom was determined to get help. She walked out into traffic until passersby realized she was trying to tell them something, and a Good Samaritan called animal control for assistance. The rescuers removed the drain’s grate so the ducklings could be scooped out and reunited with their concerned mom. — Watch it at Today

A few weeks ago, we told you about the family of Asian small-clawed otters who had arrived at their new home in the National Zoo. Now, mom and dad and their nine pups are ready to go public — and they’ve been named (after foods) by Whole Foods Market, which helped pay to transport them to Washington, D.C., from California. The parents are Chowder and Clementine, and their offspring include Pork Chop, Pickles, Saffron, Olive, Peaches, Turnip, Radish — and one with a more traditional title: Kevin.
